Pinpoint Test S: The Powertrain Malfunction (Wrench) Warning Indicator Is Never/Always On
Normal Operation
The Instrument Cluster (IC) receives the powertrain malfunction data from the PCM for the electronic throttle control status and the transmission status over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) communication bus. When a fault condition exists in the electronic throttle control system or the transmission, the PCM provides the IC with a message to turn on the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator.
If the electronic throttle control or transmission message is missing for 5 seconds or less, the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator remains in the last indication mode (on or off), based upon the last known good data message. If the electronic throttle control or transmission message is missing for greater than 5 seconds, the IC sets DTC U0101 and defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator on.
NOTE: If U0101 is set in the IC other symptoms may also be present such as an inoperative speedometer, tachometer or temperature gauge.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Electronic throttle control concern
- Transmission concern
- IC
PINPOINT TEST S: THE POWERTRAIN MALFUNCTION (WRENCH) WARNING INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON
-------------------------------------------------
S1 CARRY OUT THE IC INDICATOR LAMP CONTROL ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL
- Ignition ON.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IC DataLogger.
- Select the IC powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator (ETC_IND) active command. Command the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator on and off. Observe the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator.
- Does the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator illuminate when commanded on, and turn off when commanded off?
Yes
GO to S2.
No
INSTALL a new IC. REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) Instrument Cluster (IC). TEST the system for normal operation.
-------------------------------------------------
S2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IC SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded IC DTCs from the self-test.
- Are any DTCs recorded?
Yes
For DTC U0101, Go To Pinpoint Test AF. Pinpoint Tests AF: DTC U0101
For all other DTCs, REFER to DTC Charts. Instrumentation, Message Center and Warning Chimes
No
GO to S3.
-------------------------------------------------
S3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE KOEO PCM SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded PCM DTCs from the Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) self-test.
- Are any DTCs recorded?
Yes
REFER to the Computers and Control Systems Information.
No
INSTALL a new PCM. TEST the system for normal operation.
