DISASSEMBLY
1. Remove relief valve plug and washer, then remove valve and spring form pump housing bore.
2. Remove oil pump cover attaching bolts, then remove cover and gears.
3. If necessary, carefully remove oil seal from oil pump cover using a suitable screwdriver.

INSPECTION
1. Check to ensure relief valve slides freely in pump housing bore. If valve does not slide freely, replace oil pump.
2. Check relief valve spring for wear and damage and replace as necessary.
3. Check oil pump housing for wear and damage and replace as necessary.
4. Check oil pump strainer and pick-up tube for wear and damage and replace as necessary.
5. Using a suitable feeler gauge, measure driven gear to pump housing clearance. Clearance should be .004 to .007 inch, Fig. 18.
6. Measure clearance between gear tips and pump crescent, Figs. 19 and 20. Clearance should be .004 to .0093 inch for drive gear and .0024 to .0115 for driven gear.
7. Using a straight edge and feeler gauge, measure gear side clearance, Fig. 21. If clearance exceeds .0039 inch, the pump assembly should be replaced.
ASSEMBLY
1. Lubricate relief valve and spring with engine oil, then position spring and valve into pump housing bore.
2. Install relief valve plug and torque to specification listed at the end of this section.
3. Lubricate drive and driven gear with engine oil, then position in pump housing.
4. If removed, install replacement oil seal on oil pump cover using tool No. J-35269 or equivalent. After installing oil seal, apply engine oil to seal lips.
5. Install pump cover and gasket, then torque cover attaching screws to specification under SPECIFICATIONS/MECHANICAL SPECIFICATIONS/TIGHTENING SPECIFICATIONS.
