Fuel Pump: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
1. Disconnect the fuel hoses from the fuel pump.
2. Remove the bolts and the fuel pump and heat insulator assembly.
3. after removing the fuel pump, cover the fuel pump mounting face on the cylinder head to prevent the discharge of oil.
INSPECTION
1. Check the outside of the fuel pump for cracks and other damate. The fuel pump must be replaced if cracks or other damage are present. Check for excessive wear between the rocker arm and the camshaft contact faces. The fuel pump must be replaced if there is excessive wear.
2. The following measures must be taken prior to the inspection of the fuel pump:
a. Moisten the valve seals by poring a small amount of fuel into the fuel pump.
b. Remove the rocker arm spring. Measure the force and the play of the rocker arm by moving the arm.
3. Check the inlet valve.
a. Move the rocker arm to the pump side and hold it in this position.
b. Shut both the return pipe and the outlet pipe.
c. Allow the rocker arm to return to its original position.
d. When the rocker arm is returned to its original position, there should be an increase in the amount of play.
e. If the amount of play does not increase, the fuel pump must be replaced.
4. Check the outlet valve.
a. The rocker arm must not move when the inlet pipe is closed. DO NOT apply excessive force to the rocker arm.
b. The fuel pump must be replaced it there is excessive play.
5. Check the diaphragm.
a. The rocker arm must not move when the inlet, the outlet, and the return pipes are stout.
INSTALLATION
Pump And Sending Unit Mounting:
1. Install sending unit and lead wires to the fuel pump assembly.
2. Install two mounting screws to the sending unit.
3. Install fuel pump motor to fuel pump assembly, and connect two pump motor electrical connectors.
4. Install one mounting screw to the fuel pump motor.
5. Connect fuel pump assembly and gasket to the fuel tank.
6. Install twelve attaching screws to the fuel pump assembly.
7. Connect fuel feed and return hoses and clamps to the fuel pump assembly.
8. Install fuel tank into the vehicle.
9. Start vehicle and check for fuel leaks.
