ESA Ignition System (Without Vacuum Advance)

Engine Cranks But Won't Run:

Chart A-3 Wiring Diagram:

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION:

The ECM supplies voltage to a module inside the distributor. The module supplies this voltage to the crank angle sensor, the sensor toggles this voltage to ground.

TEST DESCRIPTION: Numbers below refer to circled numbers on the diagnostic chart.

1. Open in either fuse could be the cause of a "Crank But Will Not Run."

2. This will check the spark plug wire for opens.

3. This test inspects the injector.

4. This will determine if the ignition coil is supplying spark to distributor.

5. This tests the ECM toggling of the ignition coil.

DIAGNOSTIC AIDS:

^ Water or foreign material can cause a no start during freezing weather. The engine may start after 5 or 6 minutes in a heated shop. The problem may not re-occur until an overnight park in freezing temperatures.

^ Be sure to check connectors for contamination, corrosion or bent terminals.

^ Check for codes.
