LSI Conventional Ignition System (With Vacuum Advance)

Engine Cranks But Won't Run:

Chart A-3 Wiring Diagram:

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION:

The ignition coil is controlled by the pickup coil inside the distributor. When the pickup coil makes the voltage low in the ignition coil's primary circuit it causes the secondary coil winding to produce a voltage to fire the spark plugs. The ECM receives a tach signal to pulse the injector at the same time the spark plugs are fired.

TEST DESCRIPTION: Numbers below refer to circled numbers on the diagnostic chart.

1. Checking for spark to spark plugs.

2. Coil should have B+ to both terminals.

3. The injector test light should blink when cranking.

4. Should have B+ on both wires to distributor.

5. No resistance or high resistance would cause a crank but will not run.

6. Test light should blink while cranking the engine.

DIAGNOSTIC AIDS:

^ Water or foreign material can cause a no start during freezing weather. The engine may start after 5 or 6 minutes in a heated shop. The problem may not re-occur until an overnight park in freezing temperatures.

^ Be sure to check connectors for contamination, corrosion or bent terminals.

^ Check for codes.
