Air Bag: Service and Repair

Always wear safety glasses and gloves. Wash hands with mild soap and water after handling a deployed module.

1. Deactivate airbag system as described under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG DEACTIVATION.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. Remove four screws from rear of steering wheel.
4. Disconnect electrical connector and carefully remove inflator module from steering wheel.
5. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. On Metro models, torque mounting screws to 89 inch lbs.
b. On Storm models, torque mounting screws to 44 inch lbs.
c. Following installation, activate airbag system as described under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG ACTIVATION.
d. Turn ignition switch to the On position and verify the ``Inflatable Restraint'' indicator flashes 7 to 9 times then turns Off. If indicator does not respond, refer to DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING PROCEDURE/TESTING PROCEDURES/RETRIEVING TROUBLE CODES.
