Cylinder Head - Assemble

NOTE: Thoroughly clean all parts before assembly. Apply engine oil to all sliding and rotating surfaces before assembly. Install valve components in their original locations.

1. If a new cylinder head is being used, spark plug tubes will have to be installed. Apply RTV silicone sealer GM P/N 1052917, or equivalent, to spark plug tube hole of the cylinder head. Using a press, install new spark plug tubes to cylinder head leaving 46.8 to 47.6 mm (1.843 to 1.874 inch) of the tube protruding from the head.
2. Valve guide bushings to cylinder head (if removed).
3. Spring seats to cylinder head.

NOTE: Intake valve guide oil seals are gray and the exhaust valve guide oil seals are black.

4. New valve guide oil seals to cylinder head using a valve guide seal installer.
5. Slide valves into cylinder head.
6. Valve springs and spring retainers.
7. Compress valve springs using a valve spring compressor and a adapter.
8. Valve keepers to valve stems.
9. Remove valve spring compressor and adapter.
10. Using a plastic-faced hammer, lightly tap the valve stem tip to insure proper fit and sealing.
11. Valve lifters and shims, checking to make sure the valve lifter rotates smoothly by hand.
