- Tools Required, or equivalent:J 1859-03 Crankshaft Pulley Puller
J 8614-01 Crankshaft Pulley Holder
J 26900-6 Dial Caliper
1. Negative (-) battery cable.
2. One bolt, hose, electrical connector and windshield washer reservoir from vehicle (standard brake equipped vehicles).
3. Cruise control actuator cover (if equipped).
4. Cruise control electrical connector (if equipped).
5. Cruise control cable (if equipped).
6. Three bolts and cruise control actuator from vehicle (if equipped).
7. Raise and suitably support vehicle.
8. Right front wheel and tire assembly.
9. Ten bolts, two plastic clips and right front wheelhousing.
10. Loosen the coolant pump pulley mounting bolts.
11. Loosen generator adjusting bolt, pivot bolt and lock bolt and Remove generator/coolant pump drive belt.
12. Lower vehicle.
13. Loosen the idler pulley mounting bolt.
14. Loosen the idler pulley adjusting bolt and Remove the A/C compressor drive belt (if equipped).
15. A/C compressor electrical connector (if equipped).
16. Four bolts and A/C compressor, relocate compressor and suspend (if equipped).
17. Four bolts and A/C compressor mounting bracket (if equipped).
18. Loosen the power steering pump pivot and lock bolts, slide the pump toward the engine and Remove the drive belt (if equipped).
19. The following electrical connectors:
- Generator electrical connector.
- Generator lead wire.
- Oil pressure switch electrical connector.
20. Two bolts and engine wiring harness cover.
21. Wiring harness from cylinder head cover.
22. Secondary (spark plug) wires. See Powertrain Management.
23. Spark plugs from cylinder head.
24. Two hose clamps and Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) hoses from the cylinder head cover.
25. Four cap nuts, seal washers and cylinder head cover with gasket from cylinder head.
26. Turn crankshaft to align timing mark on crankshaft pulley at 0, setting No. 1 cylinder at Top Dead Center (TDC) of compression stroke. Check that the valve lifters on the No. 1 cylinder are loose. If not, turn crankshaft pulley one complete revolution (360 degrees).
27. Engine ground wire from right fender apron.
28. Engine mount.
29. Four bolts and coolant pump pulley from coolant pump.
30. Crankshaft pulley using a crankshaft pulley holder and a crankshaft pulley puller.
31. Nine bolts and three timing belt covers from engine.
32. Slide timing belt guide from crankshaft.
NOTE: If timing belt is to be reused, mark timing belt with arrow showing direction of engine revolution. Put matchmarks where timing belt meets with crankshaft timing gear and camshaft timing gear to ensure installation in the same position.
33. Timing belt tensioner bolt, tensioner and tension spring.
CAUTION: Do not bend, twist or turn the timing belt inside out. Do not allow the belt to come in contact with oil, coolant or steam.
34. Timing belt from camshaft and crankshaft timing gears.
CAUTION: Be careful not to damage the cylinder head when holding camshaft in place.
35. Camshaft timing gear bolt while holding camshaft by the hexagonal wrench head section and camshaft timing gear from vehicle (if required).
36. Crankshaft timing gear using two flat-bladed screwdrivers to pry off (if required). Inspect:
a. Tuning belt for the following:
- Premature parting.
- Cracked or damaged teeth.
- Noticeable wear or cracks in the belt face.
- Wear or damage only on one side of the belt. If found, check alignment of each gear, tensioner and guide.
b. Idler pulley for freedom of rotation. If any roughness is found, replace the idler pulley. Measure free length of tension spring using a dial caliper. If free length is not 36.9 mm (1.453 inches), replace the spring. Stretch the tension spring to 43.6 mm (1.717 inch), which is its installed length, and measure the tension. The tension spring should have a tension of 34 Nm (7.7 ft. lbs.) to 38 Nm (8.6 ft. lbs.). If the tension is not as specified, replace the tension spring.
