Front Seat-Back or Head Restraint Squeaks

SYMPTOM

The upper portion of the front seat-back or head restraint area squeaks when you push back against the seat-back.

PROBABLE CAUSE

The head restraint mount may not have been lubricated before assembly.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Lubricate the head restraint mount.

(One tube repairs about 80 seats)

DIAGNOSIS

NOTE:

Push back against the seat-back:

Does the upper seat-back or the head restraint area squeak?

Yes - Go to REPAIR PROCEDURE.

No -

^ If you hear a different noise, continue with normal troubleshooting.

^ If you don't hear any noise, get more information from your customer and, if needed, continue with normal troubleshooting.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

SRS components are located in this area. Review the SRS locations and the precautions and procedures before doing repairs or service.

NOTE:

^ Take care not to tear or damage the seat cover.

^ Put on gloves to protect your hands.

^ Use the appropriate tool to avoid damage when removing components.

1. Remove the head restraint.

2. Remove the front seat armrest.

3. Remove the pins from the seat-back.

4. Insert the trim pad remover between the bottom of the seat-back panel and the seat frame until it squarely engages one of the clips. Gently pry on the clip until it detaches from the seat frame, then repeat for the other clip.

5. Gently pull back the seat-back panel to release the side hooks, then pull down the seat-back panel to release the top hooks. Let the seat-back panel hang in place with its straps attached.

NOTE:
The seat-back panel clips usually break during disassembly. Always replace them with new ones.

6. Release the seat-back cover hook strips.

7. Pinch the tabs on the ends of the head restraint guides, then remove them from the seat-back.

8. Pull the seat-back cover forward to expose the top of the seat-back foam.

9. Lift the top of the seat-back foam off the seat frame, and pull it forward.

10. Apply a few drops of oil to the head restraint mount under the inertia lock.

11. Confirm that the squeaking is gone by moving the head restraint mount back and forth.

12. Reattach the top of the seat-back foam to the seat frame. Reattach the seat-back cover.

13. Reinstall the head restraint guides.

14. Reattach the seat-back panel using new clips.

15. Reinstall the pins in the seat-back, and reinstall the front seat armrest.

16. Reinstall the head restraint.
