Rear License Plate Grommets Spin; Can't Remove the License Plate

SYMPTOM
The rear license plate grommets spin when removing or installing the license plate screws.
PROBABLE CAUSE
The grommet or screw size is incorrect.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Replace the rear license plate grommets and screws.

REPAIR PROCEDURE-CR-V
NOTE:
^ Put on gloves to protect your hands.
^ Use the appropriate tool from the KTC trim tool set to avoid damage when removing components.
^ Take care not to bend or scratch the trim or the panels.
1. Remove the tailgate upper trim panel:
^ Release the hooks and the tabs from the left and right tailgate side trim.
^ Pull out the tailgate upper trim by hand to detach the clips, then remove the trim.
2. Remove the right and left tailgate side trim:
^ Release the hooks and the tabs from the tailgate lower trim panel.
^ Pull back the trim by hand to detach the clips, then remove the trim.
3. Remove the tailgate lower grip:
^ Release the hooks and the tabs with the appropriate trim tool, then pull and remove the lower grip caps.
^ Remove the screws, then remove the lower grip.
4. Pull back the tailgate lower trim panel by hand to detach the clips, then remove the trim panel.
5. Hold the grommets with pliers, then remove screws and the license plate.
6. Release the grommets with pliers, then push them out of the tailgate.
7. Push the new grommets into the tailgate.
NOTE:
If the clips are damaged or stress-whitened, replace them with new ones.
8. Reinstall the tailgate lower trim panel.
9. Reinstall the lower grip onto the tailgate lower trim panel, and torque the bolt to 9.8 N.m (7.2 lb.ft).
10. Reinstall the tailgate side trims.
11. Reinstall the tailgate upper trim.
12. Reinstall the license plate.
REPAIR PROCEDURE - CROSSTOUR
NOTE:
^ Put on gloves to protect your hands.
^ Use the appropriate tool from the KTC trim tool set to avoid damage when removing components.
^ Take care not to bend or scratch the trim or the panels.
1. If equipped: Remove the rear shelf:
^ Release the rear shelf from both rear shelf hooks.
^ Pull out the rear shelf to release the pins.
2. Remove the tailgate middle trim:
^ Release the hooks and the tabs from both tailgate side trim.
^ Pull back the tailgate middle trim to detach the clips.
3. Remove the right and left tailgate side trim:
^ If equipped: Pry out the hook's lid, and remove the screw, the grommet, the collar, and the rear shelf hook.
^ Pull out the trim to release the hooks and the tab.
^ Pull out the trim to detach the clips.
4. Pull out the tailgate upper trim panel to detach the clips, then remove it.
5. Pry out the caps and remove the bolts, then remove the lower grip from the tailgate lower trim panel.
6. Remove the tailgate lower trim panel:
^ Detach the clip beside the tailgate latch.
^ Pull down the panel to detach the clips.
7. Hold the grommets with pliers, then remove screws and the license plate.
8. Release the grommets with pliers, then push them out of the tailgate.
9. Push the new grommets into the tailgate.
NOTE:
If the clips are damaged or stress-whitened, replace them with new ones.
10. Install the tailgate lower trim panel.
11. Install the lower grip onto the tailgate lower trim panel, and torque the bolt to 9.4 N~m (6.9 lb-ft).
12. Install the tailgate upper trim panel.
13. Install the tailgate side trim.
14. Install the tailgate middle trim.
15. Install the rear shelf (if applicable).
16. Install the license plate.
