Warranty Extension: 2007-11 CR-V Tailgate Paint Finish
(Replaces 11-015, Rust on the Tailgate, dated March 19, 2011)
BACKGROUND
Dissimilar metals in the chrome trim and the tailgate, along with road salt, may create a very low electrochemical reaction that forms corrosion, rust spots or stains on the tailgate.
American Honda is extending the warranty on the tailgate paint finish to 7 years from the original date of purchase.
This warranty extension does not apply to any vehicle that has ever been declared a total loss or sold for salvage by a financial institution or insurer, or has a branded or similar title under any state's law.
CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION
Owners of affected vehicles will receive a notification of this warranty extension starting in January 2013. An example of the customer notification is included at the end of this service bulletin.
Before doing work on a vehicle, verify its eligibility by doing an iN VIN status inquiry.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Remove the license plate trim, repair the rust spots using detailing clay or, if the spots are blistered refinish the tailgate using best shop practices. Reinstall the trim using new sealing gaskets and nuts with plastic washer.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Remove the tailgate upper trim:
^ Release the hooks and the tabs from the tailgate left side trim and the tailgate right side trim.
^ Pull out the tailgate upper trim by hand to detach the clips, then remove the trim.
2. Remove the tailgate left side trim and the tailgate right side trim:
^ Release the hooks and the tabs from the tailgate side trim.
^ Pull back the trim by hand to detach the clips, then remove both left and right side trim.
3. Remove the tailgate lower grip:
^ Release the hooks and the tabs with the appropriate trim tool, then pull out and remove the tailgate lower grip caps from the tailgate lower grip.
^ Remove the screws, then remove the tailgate lower grip from the tailgate lower trim panel.
4. Pull off the tailgate lower trim panel by hand to detach the clips, then remove the trim panel.
5. From inside the tailgate, remove the bolt and the nuts securing the rear license trim.
6. Pull out the rear license trim with the appropriate trim tool to release the clips, then remove the rear license trim from the tailgate.
NOTE:
The grommets will stay in the tailgate. If the pins and the grommets are damaged or stress-whitened, replace them as an assembly.
7. Using detailing clay, clean the tailgate in the areas of the rust spots and blisters, then polish.
^ If the rust spots and blisters are gone, go to step 8.
^ If the rust spots and blisters are still present, refinish the tailgate using best shop practices, then go to step 8.
8. Remove the grommets from the tailgate, then install them onto the clips on the rear license trim.
9. Install the new sealing gaskets on the studs of the rear license trim.
10. Reinstall the rear license trim into the holes of the tailgate until the clips snap into place.
11. Install the new nuts with plastic washers, then tighten the nuts to 4 N.m (3 lb-ft).
12. Reinstall the tailgate lower trim panel and the tailgate lower grip. Tighten the screws to 9.8 N.m (7.2 lb-ft).
13. Reinstall the left and right side tailgate trim, then reinstall the tailgate upper trim.
