Exhaust System - Squeaks Under Various Conditions

SYMPTOM

*The exhaust squeaks when the engine rocks back and forth under the following conditions:

^ The steering wheel is turned from lock to lock.

^ The A/C is activated.

^ The engine has any load applied.*

PROBABLE CAUSE

The front exhaust gasket is sticking to the front flange of the TWC (three way catalytic converter) inlet.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Clean both flanges with an angle grinder and a ScotchBrite(TM) ROLOC(TM) surface conditioning disc, and replace the gasket.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Raise the vehicle on a lift.

2. Support the TWC with a transmission jack.

3. Remove the exhaust flange nuts and bolts.

4. Remove the TWC, and discard both gaskets.

5. Place the TWC in a vise.

NOTE:
Make sure not to bend the pipe or scratch it excessively.





6. Stuff a shop towel into the exhaust pipe to keep debris out. Use a 90-degree angle grinder with a Scotch-Brite Roloc surface conditioning disc to remove all material left from the old gasket.

*7. Install the TWC with new gaskets. Torque the nuts to 33 N.m (25 lb-ft) and the bolts to 22 N.m (16 lb-ft).

NOTE:
It may be necessary to walk the new exhaust gasket onto the primary catalyst, and then lightly tap the gasket into place.*

8. Test-drive the vehicle to make sure the squeak is gone.
