Steering Gearbox Removal
Special Tools Required
- Ball Joint Thread Protector, 12 mm 07AAF-SDAA100
- Ball Joint Remover, 28 mm 07MAC-SL0A202
SRS components are located in this area. Review the SRS component locations Locations, and the precautions and procedures Service and Repair before doing repairs or service.
Note these items during removal:
- Using clean solvent and a brush, wash any oil and dirt off the valve body unit, its lines, and the end of the steering gearbox. Blow dry with compressed air.
- Be sure to remove the steering wheel before disconnecting the steering joint or damage to the cable reel can occur.
1. Drain the power steering fluid Testing and Inspection.
2. Do the battery terminal disconnection procedure Procedures.
3. Raise and support the vehicle Service and Repair.
4. Remove the front wheels.
5. Remove the driver's airbag Driver's Airbag Replacement, and steering wheel Steering Wheel Removal.
6. Remove the driver's dashboard lower cover Driver's Dashboard Lower Cover Removal/Installation.
7. Remove the steering joint bolts, and disconnect the steering joint by moving the steering joint (A) toward the column.
8. Remove the center guide from the top of the pinion shaft (B) (if equipped), and discard it.
9. Remove the cotter pin (A) from the tie-rod end ball joint, then remove the nut (B) on both sides.
10. Disconnect the tie-rod end ball joint from the damper steering arm using the ball joint thread protector and the ball joint remover on both sides Ball Joint Removal.
NOTE: Be careful not to damage the ball joint boot when installing the remover.
11. Remove the power steering heat shield (A).
12. Remove the engine wire harness clamp and clips (A) from the two mounting brackets.
13. Loosen the adjustable hose clamp (A) and disconnect the return hose (B).
14. Loosen the flare nut (C), and disconnect the inlet line (D).
15. Open the hose holders (A) on the return hose, and remove the return hose clamp bolt (B).
16. Disconnect the power steering pressure switch connector (A).
17. Remove the inlet line (B) on the power steering line mounting bracket (C), and move it aside.
18. Remove the body stiffener (A).
19. Remove the two flange bolts (A) and washers (B) from the driver's side of steering gearbox.
20. Remove the flange bolt (A) and nut (B) from the passenger's side of steering gearbox, and remove the mounting bracket (C).
21. Lower the steering gearbox, and rotate it so the pinion shaft points upward, and remove the mounting cushion (D).
22. Remove the pinion shaft grommet (A) from the top of valve body unit.
23. Carefully move the steering gearbox and tie-rods as an assembly toward the driver's side until the pinion shaft (A) clears the wheelwell opening (B) on the frame.
24. Remove the steering gearbox (A) through the wheelwell opening on the driver's side. Be careful not to damage the hoses, lines, and wire harnesses.
25. Remove the power steering line mounting bracket (A).
26. After removing the steering gearbox, make sure that no power steering fluid gets on the gearbox mount cushions, gearbox housing, surface of the front subframe, and stiffener. Wipe off any spilled fluid at once.
