REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Pry out the four caps, then remove the four bolts. Remove the two clips from the bottom of the bumper. Remove the four screws from the right and left wheel arches.
2. Pull on the rear bumper at the wheel arches to release it from the hooks on the side spacers.
3. With the help of an assistant, pull on the rear bumper to release it from the hooks on the upper brackets. On vehicles with backup sensors, disconnect the rear bumper subharness connector. Remove the bumper.
4. On the affected side, remove the two covers and the bolts that secure the taillight. Remove the taillight by pulling it straight back to release the pin from the retaining clips, then disconnect the two connectors.
5. Remove the two screws from the bumper spacer. Pull the spacer away from the body to release the top clip.
6. To access the remaining two clips, use diagonal cutters to cut the spacer in two places as shown.
7. Pull the ends of the spacer away from the body to break the spacer into three pieces. Remove the pieces of the spacer to expose the two clips.
8. Using a bench grinder, narrow the curved end of a trim tool to 4 mm (0.15 in) so it bends easier.
9. With the modified trim tool on the top and a standard trim tool on the bottom, release the two clips from the body as shown. Discard the clips.
10. Align the three clips of a new rear bumper spacer with the holes in the body, then press it into place.
11. Install the two screws while pressing the spacer upward.
12. If needed, repeat steps 5 thru 11 to replace the other bumper spacer.
13. Reconnect the connectors, then reinstall the taillights with the bolts and the covers.
14. With the help of an assistant, reinstall the rear bumper. On vehicles with backup sensors, reconnect the rear bumper subharness connector.
15. Reattach the rear bumper at the wheel arches.
16. Reinstall the four screws at the right and left wheel arches. Install the four bolts and caps. Reinstall the two clips at the bottom of the bumper.
