Warranty Extension: 2009-11 Pilot Tailgate Paint Finish
(Replaces 11-016, Rust Spots on the Tailgate, dated May 3, 2011)

BACKGROUND

Dissimilar metals in the chrome trim and the tailgate, along with road salt, may create a very low electrochemical reaction that forms corrosion, rust spots or stains on the tailgate.





American Honda is extending the warranty on the tailgate paint finish to 7 years from the original date of purchase.

This warranty extension does not apply to any vehicle that has ever been declared a total loss or sold for salvage by a financial institution or insurer, or has a branded or similar title under any state's law.





CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION

Owners of affected vehicles will receive a notification of this warranty extension starting in January 2013. An example of the customer notification is included at the end of this service bulletin.

Before doing work on a vehicle, verify its eligibility by doing an iN VIN status inquiry.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Remove the license plate trim, and remove the rust spots using detailing clay, or if the spots are blistered, refinish the tailgate using best shop practices. Reinstall the trim with new isolating bolts.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Remove the hatch glass weatherstrip.





2. Remove the tailgate upper trim panel.

^ Detach the hooks and the tabs from the tailgate left side trim and the tailgate right side trim.

^ Pull the tailgate upper trim panel back by hand to detach the clips, then remove it.





3. Remove the tailgate left side trim and the tailgate right side trim.

^ Pull out the top side trim to detach the clips.

^ With power tailgate: Release the rod from the slit.

^ Detach the tabs and the hooks from the tailgate lower trim panel.





4. Remove the tailgate pull pocket.

^ Carefully pull the edge of the tailgate lower trim panel just beside the tailgate pull pocket by hand, and push out the inside hooks.

^ Pull down the upper edge of the pocket and release the lower tabs.

^ With power tailgate: Disconnect the power tailgate close switch connector.





5. Pry out the cap, remove the bolt, then remove the pull strap.





6. Remove the tailgate lower trim panel.

^ Detach the clips beside the tailgate latch.

^ Pull down the panel to detach all of the clips.





7. From inside the tailgate, remove the nuts securing the rear license trim. Disconnect the back-up light connector and the rearview camera connector (if equipped).





8. Gently close the tailgate. Pull the rear license trim out to detach the clips, then remove the trim.





9. Remove the grommets from the tailgate, then install the grommets onto the clips on the rear license trim.

10. Remove the two isolating bolts from the rear license trim, and install the two new isolating bolts on the rear trim.

11. Using detailing clay, clean and polish the tailgate in the areas of the rust spots.

^ If the rust spots and blisters are gone, go to step 12.

^ If the rust spots and blisters are still present, refinish the lower tailgate using best shop practices, then go to step 12.





12. Reinstall the rear license trim.

13. Reinstall the clips into the holes in the tailgate, then push on the trim until the clips snap into place.

14. Reinstall the nuts, and torque them to 3 N.m (27 lbf-in).

15. Reconnect the back-up light connector and the rearview camera (if equipped).

16. Reinstall the tailgate lower trim panel and the tailgate lower grip.

17. Reinstall the pull strap, then tighten the screw to 9.8 N.m (7.2 lb-ft).

18. Reconnect the power tailgate close switch connector (if equipped).

19. Reinstall the pull pocket.

20. Reinstall the left and right side tailgate trim, and the tailgate upper trim.
