A/T Differential Backlash Inspection
A/T Differential Backlash Inspection
4WD
1. Remove the final driven gear and the transfer drive gear from the differential carrier.
2. Install the driveshaft and the intermediate shaft into the differential assembly (A). Place the driveshaft and the intermediate shaft on V-blocks (B).
3. Measure the backlash of the pinion gears (C) using a dial indicator (D).
- If the backlash is within the standard, go to step 4.
- If the backlash is out of standard, replace the differential assembly.
4. Remove the driveshaft and the intermediate shaft from the differential assembly.
5. Install the final driven gear and transfer drive gear on the differential carrier A/T Differential Carrier, Final Driven Gear, and Transfer Drive Gear Replacement.

NOTE: To prevent damage to the inboard joint, always use soft jaws or equivalent materials between the inboard joint and a vise.
1. Install the driveshaft and the intermediate shaft into the differential assembly.
2. Secure the driveshaft inboard joint (A) in a bench vise (B) with soft jaws (C).
3. Place the intermediate shaft (D) on a V-block (E), then hold the intermediate shaft using locking pliers (F).
4. Measure the backlash of the final driven gear (G) using a dial indicator (H).
- If the backlash is within the standard, go to step 5.
- If the backlash is out of the standard, replace the differential assembly.
5. Remove the driveshaft inboard joint from the bench vise.
6. Remove the driveshaft and the intermediate shaft from the differential assembly.
