Shift Solenoid Valve Test, Replacement, And Shift Solenoid Wire Harness Replacement
Shift Solenoid Valve Test, Replacement, and Shift Solenoid Wire Harness Replacement
1. Connect the HDS to the DLC (A) located under the driver's side of the dashboard.
2. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II). Make sure the HDS communicates with the PCM. If it does not, go to the DLC circuit troubleshooting Testing and Inspection.
3. Select Shift Solenoid Valves A, B, C, and D in the Miscellaneous Test Menu with the HDS.
4. Check that shift solenoid valves A, B, C, and D operate with the HDS. A clicking sound should be heard.
- If a clicking sound is heard, the valves are OK.The test is complete, disconnect the HDS.
- If no clicking sound is heard, go to step 5, and test the solenoid valves.
5. Do the battery removal procedure Procedures.
6. Remove the auxiliary under-hood fuse/relay box from its bracket, and remove the bracket from the battery base.
7. Remove the intake air duct and the air cleaner housing.
8. Remove the battery base and the battery base bracket.
9. Remove the spring clip (A) and the control pin (B), then separate the shift cable end (C) from the control lever (D).
10. Remove the nuts securing the shift cable bracket (E).
11. Check the bushing (F) in the shift cable end for proper fit and wear. If the bushing is loose or worn, replace the shift cable Service and Repair.
12. Disconnect the A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve A connector (A), the A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve B connector (B), the 4th clutch transmission fluid pressure switch connector (C), the shift solenoid wire harness connector (D), and the input shaft (mainshaft) speed sensor connector (E).
13. Remove the bolt securing the harness cover (F), and remove the harness cover from its bracket (G).
14. Remove A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valves A and B, the ATF feed pipes (C), and the gasket (D).
15. Replace the gasket and the O-rings (E) with new ones when installing A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valves A and B.
16. Remove the solenoid valve cover (A), the dowel pins (B), and the gasket (C).
17. Replace the gasket with a new one when installing the solenoid valve cover.
18. Disconnect the connectors from the shift solenoid valve(s) that did not click.
19. Measure the resistance of each shift solenoid valve between the connector terminal and body ground.
- If the resistance is out of standard, go to step 22 and replace the shift solenoid valve.
- If the resistance is within the standard, go to step 20 and check the solenoid valve for a clicking sound.
20. Connect a jumper wire from the negative battery terminal to body ground, and connect another jumper wire from the positive battery terminal to each solenoid valve terminal individually. A clicking sound should be heard.
- If a clicking sound is heard, go to step 21 and replace the shift solenoid wire harness.
- If no clicking sound is heard, go to step 22 and replace the shift solenoid valve.
21. Remove the shift solenoid wire harness connector (A), and replace it. Install a new O-ring (B) on the shift solenoid wire harness connector, and install the connector in the transmission housing, then go to step 29.
22. Remove the necessary shift solenoid valve mounting bolts, then remove the affected shift solenoid valves by holding the solenoid valve body.
NOTE: Do not hold the shift solenoid valve connector to remove the shift solenoid valve. Be sure to hold the shift solenoid valve body.
23. Install new O-rings (two O-rings per shift solenoid valve) (E) on the reused shift solenoid valves.
NOTE: A new shift solenoid valve comes with new O-rings. If you install a new solenoid valve, use the O-rings provided with it.
24. If shift solenoid valve D was replaced, install shift solenoid valve D (black connector) by holding the shift solenoid valve body; make sure the mounting bracket contacts the accumulator body.
NOTE: Do not hold the solenoid valve by the connector when installing the solenoid valve. Be sure to hold the solenoid valve body.
25. If shift solenoid valve A was replaced, install shift solenoid valve A (black connector) by holding the shift solenoid valve body; make sure the mounting bracket contacts the accumulator body.
26. If shift solenoid valve C was replaced, install shift solenoid valve C (brown connector) by holding the shift solenoid valve body; make sure the mounting bracket contacts the bracket of shift solenoid valve A.
NOTE: Do not install shift solenoid valve C before installing shift solenoid valve A. If shift solenoid valve C is installed before installing shift solenoid valve A, it may damage the hydraulic control system.
27. If shift solenoid valve B was replaced, install shift solenoid valve B (brown connector) by holding the shift solenoid valve body; make sure the mounting bracket contacts the accumulator body.
28. Install the shift solenoid valve mounting bolts.
29. Connect the shift solenoid valve connectors to the shift solenoid valves:
- YEL wire connector to shift solenoid valve A.
- RED wire connector to shift solenoid valve B.
- GRN wire connector to shift solenoid valve C.
- ORN wire connector to shift solenoid valve D.
30. Install the shift solenoid valve cover, the dowel pins, and a new gasket.
31. Install a new solenoid valve body gasket on the solenoid valve cover, and install the ATF feed pipes with their filter side into the transmission housing. Install new O-rings over the ATF feed pipes.
32. Install A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valves A and B.
33. Secure the shift solenoid wire harness cover with the bolt.
34. Check the connectors for rust, dirt, or oil, and clean or repair if necessary, then connect the connectors securely.
35. Apply molybdenum grease to the hole in the bushing in the shift cable end. Attach the shift cable end to the control lever, then insert the control pin into the control lever hole through the shift cable end, and secure the control pin with the spring clip/washer.
36. Secure the shift cable bracket with the nuts.
37. Install the battery base bracket and the battery base.
38. Install the air cleaner housing and the intake air duct.
39. Install the auxiliary under-hood fuse/relay box on the battery base, and install the fuse/relay box on its bracket.
40. Do the battery installation procedure Procedures.
