SRS DTC Troubleshooting: 81-61, 81-62

DTC 81-61:

No Signal From the ODS Unit

DTC 81-62:

Incorrect Data From the ODS Unit

NOTE: Before doing this troubleshooting procedure, review SRS Precautions and Procedures Service and Repair, General Troubleshooting Information Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes, and Battery Terminal Disconnection and Reconnection Procedures.

1. Make sure nothing is on the front passenger's seat, and make sure nothing in the seat-back pocket.

2. Clear the DTCs with the HDS.

3. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II), then wait for 10 seconds.

4. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

Is DTC 81-61 or 81-62 indicated?

YES -

Go to step 5.

NO -

Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Go to Troubleshooting Intermittent Failures. If another DTC is indicated, troubleshoot the DTC.

5. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

6. Check the No. 10 (7.5 A) fuse in the under-dash fuse/relay box.

Is the fuse OK?

YES -

Go to step 8.

NO -

Replace the fuse, then turn the ignition switch ON (II). If the fuse blows again, check for a short in the No. 10 (7.5 A) fuse circuit (dashboard wire harness, floor wire harness, front passenger's seat wire harness, or ODS unit harness), then clear the DTC.

7. Check the connection between the ODS unit 18P connector (A) and the ODS unit (B).

Is the connection OK?

YES -

Go to step 8.

NO -

Repair the poor connection, then clear the DTC, and retest. If DTC 81-61 or 81-62 is still present, go to step 8.

8. Disconnect the ODS unit harness 18P connector (A) from the ODS unit (B).

9. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).

10. Measure the voltage between body ground and ODS unit harness 18P connector terminal No. 1. There should be battery voltage.

Is there battery voltage?

YES -

Go to step 15.

NO -

Go to step 11.

11. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

12. Disconnect dashboard wire harness 24P connector C402 (A) from the floor wire harness 24P connector C402 (B).

13. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).

14. Measure the voltage between the No. 13 terminal of the dashboard wire harness 24P connector C402 and body ground. There should be battery voltage.

Is there battery voltage?

YES -

Open in the WHT wire of the floor wire harness, the front passenger's seat wire harness or the ODS unit harness; replace the faulty harness, then clear the DTC.

NO -

Open in the dashboard wire harness, poor connection at connector N (45P), or faulty under-dash fuse/relay box; replace the dashboard wire harness or faulty part, then clear the DTC.

15. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

16. Measure the resistance between body ground and ODS unit harness 18P connector terminal No. 12. There should be less than 1.0 Ohms.

Is the resistance as specified?

YES -

Go to step 17.

NO -

Open in the ODS unit harness, the front passenger's seat wire harness or the floor wire harness; check the connection at G501 Connector And Harness Locations. If the connection is OK, replace the faulty harness, then clear the DTC.

17. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

18. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery, then wait at least 3 minutes.

19. Disconnect SRS unit connector A (28P) from the SRS unit.

20. Measure the resistance between body ground and SRS unit connector A (28P) terminal No. 14. There should be an open circuit or at least 1 MOhms.

Is the resistance as specified?

YES -

Go to step 21.

NO -

Go to step 27.

21. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).

22. Measure the voltage between body ground and SRS unit connector A (28P) terminal No. 14. There should be less than 0.2 V.

Is the voltage as specified?

YES -

Go to step 23.

NO -

Short to power in the dashboard wire harness, the floor wire harness, the front passenger's seat wire harness, or the ODS unit harness, then clear the DTC.

23. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

24. Measure the resistance between SRS unit connector A (28P) terminal No. 14 and ODS unit harness 18P connector terminal No. 7. There should be less than 1.0 Ohms.

Is the resistance as specified?

YES -

Faulty ODS unit or SRS unit; replace the ODS unit ODS Unit Replacement, then clear the DTC, and retest. If the DTC is still present, replace the SRS unit SRS Unit Replacement.

NO -

Go to step 25.

25. Disconnect the floor wire harness 10P connector C504 from the front passenger's seat wire harness.

26. Measure the resistance between SRS unit connector A (28P) terminal No. 14 and floor wire harness 10P connector C504 terminal No. 8. There should be less than 1.0 Ohms.

Is the resistance as specified?

YES -

Open in the front passenger's seat wire harness; replace the front passenger's seat wire harness, then clear the DTC.

NO -

Open in the dashboard wire harness or the floor wire harness; replace the faulty harness, then clear the DTC.

27. Disconnect front passenger's seat wire harness 4P connector C801 from the ODS unit harness.

28. Measure the resistance between body ground and SRS unit connector A (28P) terminal No. 14. There should be an open circuit or at least 1 MOhms.

Is the resistance as specified?

YES -

Short to ground in the ODS unit harness; replace the ODS unit harness, then clear the DTC.

NO -

Short to ground in the dashboard wire harness, the front passenger's seat wire harness or the floor wire harness; replace the faulty harness, then clear the DTC.
