Tailgate Will Not Open In Swing Mode, or the Upper Handle Is Difficult to Squeeze
SYMPTOM
The tailgate will not open in swing mode, or the upper tailgate handle is difficult to squeeze.
PROBABLE CAUSE
The tailgate upper handle rod is too long, making the synchronizer out of adjustment in the swing mode.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Replace the tailgate upper handle rod.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Drop open the tailgate.
2. Remove the tailgate top trim:
^ Remove the screws.
^ Slide the top trim to the right with a rubber mallet, and remove it. The clips stay in the tailgate.
^ Remove the upper clips from the tailgate.
3. Remove the Torx bolts with a Torx T40 bit, then remove the tailgate trim panel.
4. Disconnect the upper handle rod from the upper handle and the synchronizer.
5. Install the new upper handle rod.
6. Reinstall the tailgate trim panel, and torque the bolts to 9.8 N.m (7.2 lb-ft).
7. Reinstall the clips on the tailgate top trim, then reinstall the trim on the upper tailgate. Reinstall the four screws.
