Parking Brake Cable: Service and Repair




Parking Brake Cable Replacement

Exploded View





NOTE:

- The parking brake cable must not be bent or distorted. This will lead to stiff operation and premature cable failure.
- Refer to the Exploded View as needed during this procedure.

Front Parking Brake Cable Replacement (Cable A)

1. Release the parking brake, and remove the adjusting nut cap (A), then loosen the parking brake adjusting nut (B).





2. Remove the driver's side front door sill trim (sill plate) and the kick panel Service and Repair.

3. Remove the footrest Service and Repair.

4. Pull back the carpet from the driver's footwell to access the parking brake cables.

5. Remove the equalizer cover (A).





6. Disconnect the equalizer spring (B), then disconnect both rear parking brake cables (C) from the equalizer (D).

7. Remove the two bolts (E) and one nut (F) holding the front parking brake cable to the floor.

8. Remove the parking brake cable adjusting hardware, then remove the cable.

NOTE: If necessary, remove the parking brake pedal assembly Service and Repair.

9. Install the new cable in the reverse order of removal.

10. Do the parking brake adjustment.

NOTE: Do the Major Adjustment first, then do the Minor Adjustment. Apply the parking brake firmly 10 times then adjust it again.

Rear Parking Brake Cables (Left and Right) Replacement

1. Release the parking brake, and remove the adjusting nut cap (A), then loosen the parking brake adjusting nut (B).





2. Remove the driver's side front door sill trim (sill plate) and the kick panel Service and Repair.

3. Remove the footrest Service and Repair.

4. Pull back the carpet from the driver's footwell to access the parking brake cables.

5. Remove the equalizer cover (A).





6. Remove the equalizer spring (B), then disconnect both rear parking brake cables (C) from the equalizer (D). Remove the bolts (E) and cable bracket (F) holding the cables to the floor.

7. Push the brake cables down through the cable access holes in the floor.

8. Raise and support the vehicle Service and Repair.

9. Remove the rear wheels.

10. Remove the front floor frame stiffener (A) above the propeller shaft center support bearing (B).






11. Remove the fuel tank guard (skid plate covering the EVAP canister) (A) .






12. Remove all of the parking brake cable mounting fasteners.

13. Remove the brake hose bracket mounting bolts (A) from the knuckle.





14. Remove the brake caliper bracket mounting bolts (B), then remove the caliper assembly (C) from the knuckle. To prevent damage to the caliper assembly or brake hose, use a short piece of wire to hang the caliper assembly from the undercarriage.

NOTE: Do not twist the brake hose excessively.

15. Remove the brake disc/drum flathead screws (A).





16. Remove the brake disc/drum (B) from the hub.

NOTE:

- If a disc/drum is stuck to the hub, remove the access plug (C), turn the adjuster nut (D) with a brake adjust tool or a flat-tip screwdriver until the shoes become loose.
- If the brake disc/drum is still stuck to the hub, thread two 8 x 1.25 mm bolts (E) into the brake disc/drum to push it away from the hub. Turn each bolt 90 degrees at a time to prevent the brake disc/drum from binding.

17. Disconnect and remove the upper return springs (A), then remove the shoe guide plate (B).






18. Remove the tension pins (A) by pushing the respective retainers (B) and turning the pin.






19. Remove the connecting rod (A) and the rod spring (B).





20. Lower the parking brake shoe assembly.

21. Remove the forward brake shoe (A) and the adjuster assembly (B) by removing the lower return spring (C).






22. Remove the rearward brake shoe (A) by disconnecting the parking brake cable (B) from the parking brake lever (C).






23. Remove the parking brake cable (A) from the backing plate (B) using a 12 mm offset wrench (C).





24. Repeat for other side.

25. Install the parking brake cables in the reverse order of removal.

NOTE: Be careful not to bend or distort the cable.

26. Adjust the parking brake.

NOTE: Do the Major Adjustment first, apply the parking brake firmly 10 times then do the Minor Adjustment again.

27. Clean the mating surfaces between the brake disc/ drum and the inside of the wheel, then install the rear wheels.
