Dashboard/Steering Hanger Beam Removal/Installation

SRS components are located in this area. Review the SRS component locations Locations and the precautions and procedures Service and Repair before doing repairs or service.
NOTE:
- Put on gloves to protect your hands.
- Take care not to scratch the dashboard, the body, or the related parts.
- Have an assistant help you when removing and installing the dashboard/steering hanger beam.
- Use the appropriate tool from the KTC trim tool set to avoid damage when removing components.
1. Do the battery terminal disconnection procedure, then wait at least 3 minutes before beginning work.
2. Remove these items:
- Driver's dashboard lower cover Driver's Dashboard Lower Cover Removal/Installation
- Dashboard center lower cover Dashboard Center Lower Cover Removal/Installation
- Center console Center Console Removal/Installation
- Glove box Glove Box Removal/Installation
- Driver's dashboard side cover Driver's Dashboard Lower Cover Removal/Installation
- Kick panels, both sides Service and Repair
- A-pillar trims, both sides Interior Trim Removal/Installation - Pillar Areas
- Steering column Steering Column Removal/Installation
3. Disconnect the A/T shift cable Service and Repair.
4. Remove the bolt securing the parking brake release lever (A).
5. Open the passenger's front door, and remove the passenger's dashboard side cover (A).
1. Pull out the front door opening trim (B), as needed.
2. Pry up on the lower edge of the passenger's dashboard side cover at the notch (C) to detach the clip (D).
3. Gently pull out along the edge to detach the clips (E).
6. Gently pull out the right tweeter grille (A) to release the hooks (B), and disconnect the tweeter connector (C), then remove it.
7. Pull up the floor carpet (A) as needed. Remove the bolts, then remove the console front bracket (B).
8. Remove the clips, then remove the rear vent duct (C).
9. Pull up the floor carpet (A) as needed. Remove the clips securing the rear heater duct (B).
10. Slide the rear heater duct (A) rearward.
Driver's side
11. From under the dash, disconnect the left engine compartment wire harness connectors (A), the right engine compartment wire harness connectors (B), the roof wire harness connector (C), the floor wire harness connectors (D), the parking brake switch connector (E), the brake pedal position switch connector (F), and the dashboard wire harness connectors (G) from the driver's under-dash fuse/relay box (H).
NOTE: Lift the large wire harness connector locks (I) before trying to remove the connectors from the fuse/relay box.
Middle portion
12. Disconnect the SRS unit connector A, the GPS antenna connector (B) (with navigation system), the A/C wire harness connector (C), and the floor wire harness connectors (D). Remove the ground bolt (E) with a TORX T30 bit.
Passenger's side
13. From under the dash, disconnect the front passenger's door wire harness connector (A), the AM/FM antenna lead connector (B), the right engine compartment wire harness connector (C), the floor wire harness connector (D), and the windshield defogger harness connector (E), then detach the connector clip and the harness clips (F).
14. Open the driver's door and remove the bolts (A, B) from the dashboard. Note that the bolts cannot be removed from the body because the driver's door interferes. Remove the remaining bolts (C, D, E, F), and lift up on the dashboard (G) to release it from the guide pins (H, I).
NOTE:
- Before removing the dashboard, make sure all the harnesses have been disconnected.
- Do not open the door fully with the driver's side upper dash bolts partially removed. Before removing the dashboard, open the driver's door half way, then pull the upper dash bolts outward.
15. If necessary, detach the connector clip (A) and the harness clip (B), and remove the bolts, then remove the center bracket (C).
16. Carefully remove the dashboard through the passenger's front door opening.
NOTE: Do not rest the dashboard on its lower center cover opening, or it may be damaged. Lay it on its front or back.
17. Install the dashboard in the reverse order of removal, and note these items:
- Before tightening the bolts, make sure the wire harnesses are not pinched.
- Reinstall the center bracket on the center frame, and slightly tighten the mounting bolts. Reinstall the dashboard on the body. After tightening the dashboard mounting bolts, tighten the center bracket mounting bolts and the center frame mounting bolts.
- Make sure the dashboard fits onto the guide pins correctly.
- Apply medium strength liquid thread lock to the bolts securing the center bracket and the dashboard before reinstallation.
- Make sure each connector is plugged in properly.
- Do the battery terminal reconnection procedure.
- Check for any DTCs that may have been set during repairs, and clear them.
- If necessary, adjust the A/T shift cable Adjustments.
