CORRECTIVE ACTION [New]

Make sure there is clearance between the instrument panel and the gauge assembly. Relocate and apply EPT to the wiring harnesses. Apply wool felt around the outer edge of the instrument panel.

1. Use a business card to check for clearance between the instrument panel and the gauge assembly. Note any areas where there is no clearance so you can trim them in step 8.

2. Remove the rear console.

3. Remove the front console panel.

4. Remove the radio.

5. Remove the switches from the instrument panel.

6. [New] Remove the heater assembly cover to gain access to the air mix control cable, then disconnect the end of the air mix control cable from the temperature control lever.

7. Remove the instrument panel from the dashboard.

8. Use a sharp knife to shave off a small amount of material at the zero-clearance locations noted in step 1. Smooth and bevel the shaved areas.

9. Cut a 10 x 320 mm piece of wool felt. Apply it to the top of the instrument panel so that it slightly overhangs the back edge. Some cars may have a factory-installed felt piece. Reposition this piece so that it overhangs slightly.

10. Check the position of the wool felt on the front edge of the instrument panel. If it is not positioned at the edge of the lip, pull it loose and reposition it as shown.

11. [NEW] Cut a 10 x 953 mm piece of wool felt. Apply it to the front lip of the instrument panel, from the right edge of the existing felt to just before the steering column cutout.

12. [NEW] Cut a 10 x 559 mm piece of wool felt. Apply it to the front lip of the instrument panel, from the left edge of the existing felt to just before the steering column cutout.

NOTE:
Except for the steering column cutout, the felt now surrounds the instrument panel.

13. Cut five 20 x 35 mm pieces of wool felt. Apply them to the top of the instrument panel mounting clips.

14. Remove the gauge assembly from the dashboard. Disconnect the three harness connectors.

15. Use a small screwdriver to unlock and loosen the two wire ties holding the gauge assembly wiring harness to the dashboard, Rotate the wiring harness up 1/2 turn, then tighten the wire ties.

16. Cut a 50 x 150 mm piece of EPT 3T Position it as close to the wire tie as possible, and wrap it completely around the wiring coupler.

17. Cut three 50 x 100 mm pieces of EPT 3T, and wrap one around each wiring harness as shown.

18. Place two 1.5 mm nylon washers (see PARTS INFORMATION) between the gauge assembly and the dashboard at the lower mounting holes. Reinstall the gauge assembly.

19. Look through the fins in the left vent assembly in the instrument panel. If you can see light coming through in the upper right corner, the vent assembly is not properly attached to the instrument panel. Push the vent assembly and instrument panel together until the lock tab locks into place.

20. Reinstall the instrument panel and all removed parts.

NOTE:
[New] You must adjust the air mix control cable after you reattach it. Refer to section 21 of the Service Manual for the adjustment procedure.

21. [New] Test-drive the car on a rough road to ensure that the noise is gone.
