Lifter / Lash Adjuster: Testing and Inspection

1. Inspect the hydraulic tappet for wear or damage or for a clogged oil hole.

CAUTION:
^ Never attempt to disassemble the tappets.
^ Always use the 2 mm (0.1 inch) stick (brass) when bleeding the tappets. Use of wire can cause damage to them.

2. Measure the free length of each hydraulic tappet as follows:
^ Attach the 2 mm (0.1 inch) stick (brass) to the tappet, then push and release the 2 mm (0.1 inch) stick (brass) slowly while in a jar filled with 5W-30 engine oil.

NOTE: Keep the hydraulic tappet upright and below the surface of the oil while you push and release the 2 mm stick (brass).

3. Continue operating the 2 mm (0.1 inch) stick (brass) until there are no air bubbles from the hydraulic tappet.
Remove the hydraulic tappet and try to compress it quickly by hand. Measure the compression stroke with a dial gauge on a surface plate.
^ Compression Stroke:
- Standard (New): 0.01-0.08 mm (0.0004-0.003 inch)
