Diesel Data: Automotive Repair

Differential

BACKLASH INSPECTION
1. Place the differential assembly on V-blocks, and install both axles.

2. Check the backlash of both side gears.

Standard (New): 0.05 - 0.15 mm (0.002 - 0.006 in.)

3. If the backlash is out of tolerance, replace the differential carrier.

BEARING REPLACEMENT
Required Tools
- 07746-0010100 Attachment, 32x35 mm
- 07749-0010000 Driver
- 07LAD-PW50601 Attachment, 40x50 mm

NOTE: Check the bearings for wear and rough rotation. if the bearings are OK, removal is not necessary.

1. Remove the tapered roller bearings using the special tools. a bearing separator and a press as shown.
2. Install the new tapered roller bearings, using the special tool and a press as shown.

NOTE:
- Press the bearings on until they bottom.
- Use the small end of the special tool to install the bearings.
- The bearing and outer race should be replaced as a set. Inspect and adjust the bearing preload whenever a bearing is replaced. Press in the bearings on securely so that there is no clearance between the bearings and differential carrier.

CARRIER REPLACEMENT

1. Remove the final driven gear from the differential carrier.

1. Remove the final driven gear from the differential carrier.
NOTE: The final driven gear bolts have left-hand threads.
2. Install the final driven gear with the chamfered side on the inner bore facing the differential carrier.
3. Torque the bolts to the specified torque in a crisscross pattern.

Torque to 101 Nm (74.5 ft. lbs.)

BEARING PRE-LOAD ADJUSTMENT
Required Tools
- 07749-0010000 Driver
- 07HAD-SF10100 Driver Attachment
- 07HAJ-PK40201 Preload Inspection Tool
- Or Equivalent

NOTE: If the transmission housing, torque converter housing, differential carrier, tapered roller bearing, outer race or thrust shim were replaced, the bearing preload must be adjusted.

1. Remove the bearing outer race and thrust shim from the transmission housing by heating the housing to about 212°F (100°C) with a heat gun.

CAUTION: Do not heat the housing in excess of 212°F (100°C).

NOTE:
- Replace the tapered roller bearing when the outer race is to be replaced.
- Do not use shim(s) on the torque converter housing side.
- Let the transmission housing cool to the room temperature before adjusting the bearing preload.

2. Select the two thrust shims from the table below so that their total thickness is 2.15 mm (0.085 inch).

NOTE: Do not use more than two thrust shims to adjust the bearing preload.

3. When adjusting the bearing preload with one thrust shim, start with a 2.15 mm (0.085 inch) thrust shim (No. K) from the table below.

NOTE: Do not use more than one shim to adjust the bearing preload.

4. Install the thrust shims, then install the outer race in the transmission housing using the special tools as shown.

NOTE:
- Install the outer race squarely in the transmission housing.
- Check that there is no clearance between the outer race, shims and transmission housing.

5. Install the differential assembly in the torque converter housing.

6. Install the transmission housing gasket, dowel pins, then install the transmission housing with the hangers and harness bracket.
7. Rotate the differential assembly in both directions to seat the bearings.

8. Measure the starting torque of the differential assembly in both directions with the special tool and a torque wrench.

Standard:
- New bearings: 2.7 - 3.9 Nm (24 - 35 inch lbs.)
- Reused bearings: 2.5 - 3.6 Nm (22 - 32 inch lbs.)

9. If the measurement is out of tolerance, select and install the thrust shim(s), then recheck.

NOTE:
- Changing one of the shims to the next size will increase or decrease-starting torque about 0.3 -0.4 Nm (3 - 3 inch lbs.).
- To increase the starting torque, increase the thickness of shim(s). To decrease, decrease the thickness.
- Try to keep the sizes of the two thrust shims close to the same. For example, if you need a total of 2.35 mm (0.093 inch), it is best to use a 1.20 mm (0.047 inch) and a 1.15 mm (0.045 inch).

BEARING OUTER RACE REPLACEMENT

Required Tools
- 07749-0010000 Driver
- 07HAD-SF10100 Driver Attachment
- Or Equivalent

NOTE:
- Replace the bearing with a new one whenever the outer race is to be replaced.
- Do not use shim(s) on the torque converter housing side.
- Adjust preload after replacing the bearing and outer race.
- Coat all parts with ATF during installation.

Transmission Housing Side

1. Remove the bearing outer race from the transmission housing by heating the housing to about 212°F (100°C).

CAUTION: Do not heat the housing in excess of 212°F (100°C).

2. Install the shim(s) and the outer race using the special tools as shown.

Torque Converter Housing Side

NOTE: The bearing outer race in the torque converter housing is not a press fit.

Remove the outer race from the torque converter housing, then install a new one.
