WARNING:- MAKE SURE LIFTS, JACKS AND SAFETY STANDS ARE PLACED PROPERLY, AND HOIST BRACKETS ARE ATTACHED TO THE CORRECT POSITION ON THE TRANSMISSION AND ENGINE.
- APPLY PARKING BRAKE, AND BLOCK REAR WHEELS SO VEHICLE WILL NOT ROLL OFF STANDS AND FALL ON YOU WHILE WORKING UNDER IT.
CAUTION: Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.
NOTE: The original radio has a coded theft protection circuit. Be sure to get the customer's code number before:
- disconnecting the battery.
- removing the No. 39 (7.5 A) fuse from the under-hood fuse/relay box.
- removing the radio.
- After service, reconnect power to the radio and turn it on. When the word "CODE" is displayed, enter the customer's 5-digit code to restore radio operation.
1. Remove the support struts from the hood, then prop the engine hood in a vertical position.
2. Disconnect the battery negative (-) terminal from the battery, then remove the positive (+) terminal.
3. Remove the battery hold-down bracket and battery.
4. Remove the cable holder from the battery base, and remove the ground terminal from body.
5. Remove the battery base and battery base bracket.
6. Remove the drain plug, and drain the automatic transmission fluid (ATF). Reinstall the drain plug with a new sealing washer. Torque to 49 Nm (36 ft. lbs.)
7. Remove the intake air duct.
8. Remove the starter motor cable from the strut brace, then remove the strut brace.
9. Remove the ATF cooler hoses at the joint pipes. Turn the ends of the ATF cooler hoses up to prevent ATF from flowing out, then plug the joint pipes.
NOTE: Check for any signs of leakage at the hoses.
10. Remove the starter motor cables from the starter motor, and remove the cables from the clamp.
11. Disconnect the transmission ground cable from the transmission.
12. Disconnect the connectors from the shift control solenoid valve and mainshaft speed sensor.
13. Remove the bolts from the engine sub wire harness clamp above the transmission.
14. Remove the intake air bypass (IAB) vacuum tank from the transmission.
NOTE: Do not remove the vacuum hoses.
15. Disconnect the connectors from the lock-up control solenoid valve, the countershaft speed sensor, the linear solenoid and the vehicle speed sensor.
16. Remove the splash shield.
17. Remove the center beam.
18. Remove the cotter pins and castle nuts, then separate the ball joints from the lower arm using the special tool.
19. Remove the damper fork bolts, then separate the damper fork and lower arm.
20. Pry the driveshaft out of the differential and intermediate shaft.
21. Pull on the inboard joints to remove the led driveshaft from the differential and to remove the right driveshaft from the intermediate shaft.
22. Tie plastic bags over the driveshaft ends.
NOTE: Coat all precision finished surfaces with clean engine oil.
23. Remove the led damper pinch bolt, then separate the damper fork and damper.
24. Remove the flange bolts and self-locking nut, then remove the led radius rod.
25. Remove the intermediate shaft.
26. Remove the shift cable holder bolts and the shift cable cover.
27. Remove the lock bolt securing the control lever, then remove the shift cable with control lever.
NOTE: Take care not to bend the shim cable while removing it.
28. Remove the torque converter cover, then remove the eight drive plate bolts one at a time while rotating the crankshaft pulley.
29. Place a jack under the engine and support it, then lid the transmission with a hoist.
30. Remove the rear mount stiffener. Remove the nut and bolt from the rear mount.
31. Remove the front mount bracket, then remove the front mount.
32. Remove the transmission housing mounting bolts (four bolts).
33. Remove the transmission mount.
34. Remove the transmission housing mounting bolts.
35. Remove the rear mount bolts, then raise the engine and transmission slightly, and remove the rear mount bracket from the rear mount.
CAUTION: Make sure that the engine and transmission is supported securely before removing the bolts.
36. Lower the transmission, and tilt the engine just enough for the transmission to clear the left side from body.
CAUTION: Do not let the A/C compressor pulley contact the body while tilting the engine.
37. Pull the transmission away from the engine until it clears the dowel pins, then lower it.
