Brake Fluid Leak From the ABS Modulator

SYMPTOM

Brake fluid is dripping from the left front corner of the car, and the ABS modulator is wet. The ABS light may also be on, with a Code 1 stored.

PROBABLE CAUSE

The plugs in the ABS modulator assembly are not properly tightened. (For 1994 models, refer to Service Bulletin 94-029, Brake Fluid Leak, for leakage from the accumulator.)

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Torque the plugs in the ABS modulator assembly.

NOTE:
Use the 1996 Accord Service Manual for reference when performing this procedure.

1. Attach a hose to the bleeder screw and relieve the pressure in the ABS (page 19-128).

2. Remove the modulator assembly from the car (page 19-130).

3. Remove the mounting bracket from the modulator assembly.

4. Remove the reservoir (page 19-133). Do not damage the 0-rings.

5. Locate the six plugs that need torquing.

6. Place the modulator in a soft-jawed vise, or have an assistant hold the modulator.

7. Loosen each plug 1/2 turn. Then torque the plug to 17.5 N.m (151 lb-in).

8. Reinstall the mounting bracket and the reservoir.

9. Fill the reservoir with clean brake fluid.

10. Install the modulator in the car (page 19-131).

11. Bleed the ABS (page 19-128).

12. Bleed the brake system (page 19-6).

13. Clear any codes in the ABS control unit by removing the ABS B2 fuse from the under-hood ABS fuse box for three seconds.
