Doors Lock When Lifting Handle

SYMPTOM

When you unlock a front door with the key and lift the outside handle, the door lock locks the door before it can be opened. This usually occurs in temperatures below 30° F.

PROBABLE CAUSE

The anti-theft tube presses against the door lock rod.

Wagon - Thru VIN 1HGCE1 . . . TA005882

CORRECTIVE ACTION

On both front doors, increase the cutout section of the anti-theft tube to allow for more clearance between the tube and the lock rod.

1. Remove the front door panel, but leave the door lock knob attached. Refer to section 20 of the service manual for door panel removal.

2. On the latch assembly, locate the black plastic anti-theft tube. The tube is over the door lock rod.

3. Unhook the base of the anti-theft tube from the tab on the latch by pushing it down and twisting it counterclockwise. If you cannot unhook the tube by twisting it, use a small, flat tip screwdriver to pry it off. Then pull the tube up through the door lock knob hole.

4. Set the tube on a workbench, and carefully cut away a 12 mm piece from the bottom of the tube with a razor blade.

5. Before you reinstall the tube, raise the door glass, remove the center channel mounting bolt, and move the channel forward. This will give you easier access to the latch assembly.

6. Slide the tube through the lock knob hole in the door and down over the lock rod.

7. Attach the bottom of the tube to the tab with a small, flat tip screwdriver.

8. Reposition the center channel, and tighten its mounting bolt to 9 N.m (7 lb-ft).

9. Reinstall the door panel. Refer to section 20 of the service manual.

10. Repeat this procedure on the other front door.
