Fuel Gauge Stays at Empty

SYMPTOM

The fuel gauge registers empty, even though the tank is full. This symptom is most likely to occur if the car is driven until the tank is almost completely empty before refueling.

PROBABLE CAUSE

The sending unit float is sticking on a tank rib.

Any repair performed after warranty expiration may be eligible for goodwill consideration by the District Service Manager or your Zone Office. You must request consideration, and get a decision, before starting work.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Modify the fuel gauge sending unit.

1. Wagon only: Remove the rear seat-backs, the spare tire lid, and the mid-floor cover. (Refer to service manual page 20-118.)

2. Remove the fuel tank access panel. Disconnect the electrical connector.





3. Remove the fuel gauge sending unit.

4. Carefully flex the float arm to spread the coils. Place two 10 mm washers (see PARTS INFORMATION) between the coils.

5. Reinstall the fuel gauge sending unit.

6. Reconnect the electrical connector and install the access panel.

7. Wagon only: Install the mid-floor cover, spare tire lid, and rear seat-backs.
