DTC Troubleshooting
DTC P0705: Short in Transmission Range Switch Circuit (Multiple Shift-position Input)NOTE:
^ Before you troubleshoot, record all freeze data and any on-board snapshot, and review General Troubleshooting Information.
^ This code is caused by an electrical circuit problem and cannot be caused by a mechanical problem in the transmission.
1. Clear the DTC with the HDS.
2. Start the engine.
3. With the brake pedal pressed, move the shift lever through all positions. Stop for at least 1 second in each position, and monitor the OBD status for P0705 in the DTCs/Freeze Data in A/T Mode Menu for a pass/fail.
Does the HDS indicate FAILED?
YES - Go to step 4.
NO - Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Check for an intermittent short in the wire between the transmission range switch and the PCM. If the HDS indicates NOT COMPLETED, return to step 2 and recheck.
4. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
5. Inspect the transmission range switch.
Is the switch OK?
YES - Connect the switch connector, then go to step 6.
NO - Replace the transmission range switch, then go to step 65.
6. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
7. Measure the voltage between PCM connector terminals C22 and A8 or A9, in all positions other than P.
Is there battery voltage?
YES - Go to step 14.
NO - Go to step 8.
8. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
9. Jump the SCS line with the HDS.
10. Disconnect PCM connector C (22P).
11. Check for continuity between PCM connector terminal C22 and body ground.
Is there continuity?
YES - Repair short in the wire between PCM connector terminal C22 and transmission range switch, then go to step 65.
NO - Go to step 12.
12. Disconnect PCM connector A (31P).
13. Check for continuity between PCM connector terminals A8 and body ground, and between A9 and body ground.
Is there continuity?
YES - Go to step 59.
NO - Repair open in the wire between PCM connector terminals A8, A9, and ground (G101), or repair poor ground (G101), then go to step 65.
14. Measure the voltage between PCM connector terminals C21 and A8 or A9, in all positions other than R.
Is there battery voltage?
YES - Go to step 19.
NO - Go to step 15.
15. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
16. Jump the SCS line with the HDS.
17. Disconnect PCM connector C (22P).
18. Check for continuity between PCM connector terminal C21 and body ground.
Is there continuity?
YES - Repair short in the wire between PCM connector terminal C21 and the transmission range switch, then go to step 65.
NO - Go to step 59.
19. Measure the voltage between PCM connector terminals C20 and A8 or A9, in all positions other than N.
Is there battery voltage?
YES - Go to step 24.
NO - Go to step 20.
20. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
21. Jump the SCS line with the HDS.
22. Disconnect PCM connector C (22P).
23. Check for continuity between PCM connector terminal C20 and body ground.
Is there continuity?
YES - Repair short in the wire between PCM connector terminal C20 and the transmission range switch, then go to step 65.
NO - Go to step 59.
24. Measure the voltage between PCM connector terminals C17 and A8 or A9, in all positions other than D.
Is there battery voltage?
YES -
^ Seven-position transmission: Go to step 29.
^ Five-position transmission: Go to step 44.
NO - Go to step 25.
25. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
26. Jump the SCS line with the HDS.
27. Disconnect PCM connector C (22P).
28. Check for continuity between PCM connector terminal C17 and body ground.
Is there continuity?
YES - Repair short in the wire between PCM connector terminal C17 and the transmission range switch, then go to step 65.
NO - Go to step 59.
29. Measure the voltage between PCM connector terminals C9 and A8 or A9, in all positions other than D3.
Is there battery voltage?
YES - Go to step 34.
NO - Go to step 30.
30. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
31. Jump the SCS line with the HDS.
32. Disconnect PCM connector C (22P).
33. Check for continuity between PCM connector terminal C9 and body ground.
Is there continuity?
YES - Repair short in the wire between PCM connector terminal C9 and the transmission range switch, then go to step 65.
NO - Go to step 59.
34. Measure the voltage between PCM connector terminals C1 1 and A8 or A9, in all positions other than 2 and 1.
Is there about 5 V?
YES - Go to step 39.
NO - Go to step 35.
35. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
36. Jump the SCS line with the HDS.
37. Disconnect PCM connector C (22P).
38. Check for continuity between PCM connector terminal C11 and body ground.
Is there continuity?
YES - Repair short in the wire between PCM connector terminal C11 and the transmission range switch, then go to step 65.
NO - Go to step 59.
39. Measure the voltage between PCM connector terminals C18 and A8 or A9, in all positions other than D, D3, and 2.
Is there battery voltage?
YES - Go to step 54.
NO - Go to step 40.
40. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
41. Jump the SCS line with the HDS.
42. Disconnect PCM connector C (22P).
43. Check for continuity between PCM connector terminal C18 and body ground.
Is there continuity?
YES - Repair short in the wire between PCM connector terminal C18 and the transmission range switch, then go to step 65.
NO - Go to step 59.
44. Measure the voltage between PCM connector terminals C9 and A8 or A9, in all positions other than S.
Is there battery voltage?
YES - Go to step 49.
NO - Go to step 45.
45. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
46. Jump the SCS line with the HDS.
47. Disconnect PCM connector C (22P).
48. Check for continuity between PCM connector terminal C9 and body ground.
Is there continuity?
YES - Repair short in the wire between PCM connector terminal C9 and the transmission range switch, then go to step 65.
NO - Go to step 59.
49. Measure the voltage between PCM connector terminals C18 and A8 or A9, in all positions other than D and S.
Is there battery voltage?
YES - Go to step 54.
NO - Go to step 50.
50. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
51. Jump the SCS line with the HDS.
52. Disconnect PCM connector C (22P).
53. Check for continuity between PCM connector terminal C18 and body ground.
Is there continuity?
YES - Repair short in the wire between PCM connector terminal C18 and the transmission range switch, then go to step 65.
NO - Go to step 59.
54. Measure the voltage between PCM connector terminals C12 and A8 or A9, in all positions other than R.
Is there battery voltage?
YES - Go to step 60.
NO - Go to step 55.
55. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
56. Jump the SCS line with the HDS.
57. Disconnect PCM connector C (22P).
58. Check for continuity between PCM connector terminal C12 and body ground.
Is there continuity?
YES - Repair short in the wire between PCM connector terminal C12 and the transmission range switch, then go to step 65.
NO - Go to step 59.
59. Reconnect all connectors.
60. Update the A/T software in the PCM if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good PCM.
61. Start the engine.
62. With the brake pedal pressed, move the shift lever through all positions. Stop for at least 1 second in each position.
63. Check for DTC(s) in the DTCs/Freeze Data in A/T Mode Menu with the HDS.
Is DTC P0705 indicated?
YES - If the PCM was updated, substitute a known-good PCM, then recheck. If the PCM was substituted, go to step 1.
NO - Go to step 64.
64. Monitor the OBD status for P0705 in the DTCs/Freeze Data in A/T Mode Menu for a pass/fail.
Does the HDS indicate PASSED?
YES - If the PCM was updated, troubleshooting is complete. If the PCM was substituted, replace the original PCM. If any other DTCs were indicated on step 63, go to the indicated DTC's troubleshooting.
NO - Check for poor connections and loose terminals at the transmission range switch and the PCM. If the PCM was updated, substitute a known-good PCM, then recheck. If the PCM was substituted, go to step 1. If the HDS indicates NOT COMPLETED, return to step 61 and recheck.
65. Clear the DTC with the HDS.
66. Start the engine.
67. With the brake pedal pressed, move the shift lever through all positions. Stop for at least 1 second in each position.
68. Check for DTC(s) in the DTCs/Freeze Data in A/T Mode Menu with the HDS.
Is DTC P0705 indicated?
YES - Check for poor connections and loose terminals at the transmission range switch and the PCM, then return to step 67 and recheck.
NO - Go to step 69.
69. Monitor the OBD status for P0705 in the DTCs/Freeze Data in A/T Mode Menu for a pass/fail.
Does the HDS indicate PASSED?
YES - Troubleshooting is complete. If any other DTCs were indicated on step 68, go to the indicated DTC's troubleshooting.
NO - Check for poor connections and loose terminals at the transmission range switch and the PCM, then go to step 1. If the HDS indicates NOT COMPLETED, return to step 66 and recheck.
