Differential

A/T Differential

A/T Differential Component Location Index:

Backlash Inspection
1. Install both axles into the differential, and place the axles on V-blocks (A).

2. Measure the backlash of the pinion gears (B) with a dial indicator (C).

Standard: 0.05 - 0.15 mm (0.002 - 0.006 in.)

3. If the backlash is out of standard, replace the differential carrier.

Differential Carrier and Final Driven Gear Replacement

1. Remove the final driven gear (A) from the differential carrier (B). The final driven gear bolts have left-hand threads.

2. Install the final driven gear on the differential carrier in the direction shown. Tighten the bolts to 101 Nm (10.3 kgf-m, 74.5 lbf-ft) in a crisscross pattern in two or more steps.

Carrier Bearing Replacement

Special Tools Required
Driver 40 mm I.D. 07746-0030100

NOTE: Check the bearing for wear and rough rotation. If the bearing is OK, removal is not necessary.

1. Place a collar (A) on the differential carrier, and remove the carrier bearing (B) with a commercially available bearing puller (C).

2. Install the new bearing using the driver (40 mm I.D.) and the press. Press the bearing on until it bottoms out.

Oil Seal Replacement

Special Tools Required
^ Driver 07749-0010000
^ Oil seal driver attachment 07JAD-PH80101

1. Remove the oil seal from the transmission housing.

2. Remove the oil seal from the torque converter housing.

3. Install the new oil seal flush with the transmission housing using the driver and the oil seal driver attachment.

4. Install the new oil seal in the torque converter housing using the driver and the oil seal driver attachment.

Carrier Bearing Side Clearance Inspection

Special Tools Required
^ Driver 40 mm I.D. 07746-0030100
^ Driver attachment 30 mm I.D. 07746-0030300

1. Install the spacer (A) in the torque converter housing with the spacer tab (B) in the guide. Do not mix-up the spacers between in the transmission housing and the torque converter housing.

2. Install the differential assembly (C) in the torque converter housing, and put the spacer (D) on the differential.
3. Drive the differential assembly securely in the torque converter housing so there is no clearance between the bearing, the spacer, and the housing using the driver (40 mm I.D.).

4. Install the 84 mm thrust shim (A) in the transmission housing (B).

If you replace the 84 mm thrust shim with a new one, use the same thickness as the old one.

5. Align the spring pin (A) on the selector control shaft (B) with the transmission housing groove (C) by turning the control shaft with the detent plate (D).

NOTE: Do not squeeze the end of the selector control shaft tips together while turning the control shaft.

6. Install the gasket (E) and the three dowel pins (F) on the torque converter housing (G).
7. Place the transmission housing (H) on the torque converter housing, and install the transmission mounting bolts (16 bolts). Tighten the bolts to 44 Nm (4.5 kgf-m, 33 lbf-ft) in a crisscross pattern in two or more steps.
8. Install the transmission housing mounting bolt from the torque converter side, and tighten the three bolts to 44 Nm (4.5 kgf-m, 33 lbf-ft).
9. Measure the clearance between the 84 mm thrust shim and the spacer with a feeler gauge.

10. If the clearance is out of standard, remove the 84 mm thrust shim, and measure its thickness.
11. Select and install a new thrust shim. Recheck the clearance and make sure it is within the standard.
