Shift Cable: Service and Repair
Shift Cable Replacement1. Raise the vehicle, and make sure it is securely supported.
2. Remove the center console.
3. Shift into N.
4. Remove the nut securing the shift cable end, then separate the cable end from the shift lever.
5. Rotate the socket holder (A) on the shift cable (B) a quarter turn; the tab (C) on the socket holder will be in the opening of the shift lever bracket base (D). Then slide the holder to remove the shift cable from the shift lever bracket base.
6. Remove the three way catalytic converter (TWC) heat shield.
7. Remove the shift cable bracket (A) and the grommet (B), then pull the shift cable (C) out through the hole in the body.
8. Remove the shift cable cover (A), then remove the shift cable holder (B).
9. Pry up the lock tab of the lock washer (C), and remove the lock bolt (D) and the lock washer, then separate the shift cable (E) from the selector control shaft (F).
10. Insert the new shift cable (A) through the grommet hole (B), and install the grommet (C) in its hole. Do not bend the shift cable excessively.
11. Secure the shift cable bracket (D) with the nuts.
12. Install the control lever (A) over the selector control shaft (B). Secure the control lever with new lock washer (C) and the lock bolt (D), then bend the lock tab of the lock washer against the bolt head.
13. Install the shift cable holder (E), then install the shift cable cover (F).
14. Install the TWC heat shield.
15. Install the shift cable on the shift lever, and adjust the cable.
