Booming sound while driving with audio unit on or off

NOTE:

- Check for all system's DTCs first with the HDS. If there are any DTCs stored, go to the indicated DTC's troubleshooting.
- Check the vehicle battery condition first Battery Test.
- Check the connectors for poor connections or loose terminals.

1. Start the engine.

2. Turn on the audio unit, and test-drive the vehicle.

Is a booming sound or a low-frequency hum heard from the speakers?

YES -

Go to step 3.

NO -

Operation is normal.

3. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

4. Make sure all doors, hood, and the trunk are closed.

5. Start the engine, and let it idle.

6. Do the Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) System Check Mode in the Self-Diagnostic Function.

7. Check for test items on tests 1 through 8.

NOTE: Move on to the next test item within 50 seconds, or the self-diagnostic test ends.

Does low-frequency hum sound heard from speakers for more than 5 seconds for all test items?

YES -

Go to step 8.

NO -

Go to the appropriate step listed:

- If the all tests failed;
- With premium audio, go to step 14.
- Without premium audio, replace the audio unit Audio Unit Removal/Installation (Without Navigation).

- If the 3rd test failed;
- With premium audio, go to step 28.
- Without premium audio, replace the audio unit Audio Unit Removal/Installation (Without Navigation).

- If the 4th test failed;
- With premium audio, go to step 33.
- Without premium audio, replace the audio unit Audio Unit Removal/Installation (Without Navigation).

- If the 5th test failed;
- With HandsFreeLink, go to step 38.
- Without HandsFreeLink, go to step 48.

- If the 6th test failed, go to step 59.
- If the 7th test failed, go to step 70.
- If the 8th test failed, go to step 81.

8. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

9. Start the engine, and let it idle.

10. Do the Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) System Check Mode in the Self-Diagnostic Function.

11. Do the 10th test by pressing the No. 1 button.

12. Set the parking brake, and hold the engine speed at 2,500 rpm (A/T in P or N, M/T in neutral), and move on to the 11th test by pressing the No. 1 button.

13. Press the No. 1 button several times to turn the ANC on and off.

Do you hear the low-frequency hum sound turn on and off while pressing the No. 1 button?

YES -

Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals between the audio unit, the ECM/PCM, and the gauge control module. Then, go to step 1 and recheck.

NO -

Replace the audio unit:

- With navigation Audio Unit Removal/Installation (With Navigation).
- Without navigation Audio Unit Removal/Installation (Without Navigation).

14. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

15. Connect a voltmeter between stereo amplifier connector A (24P) terminals No. 11 and No. 22.

NOTE: Use the voltmeter in AC range.






16. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).

17. Do the Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) System Check Mode in the Self-Diagnostic Function.

18. Measure the voltage during the 1st test with the display indicating OFF (press the No. 1 button to switch from ON to OFF).

NOTE: Measure voltage within 50 seconds after you started the 1st test.

Is there about 0.5 V?

YES -

Replace the stereo amplifier Service and Repair.

NO -

Go to step 19.

19. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

20. Connect a voltmeter between stereo amplifier connector A (24P) terminals No. 12 and No. 23.

NOTE: Use the voltmeter in AC range.





21. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).

22. Do the Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) System Check Mode in the Self-Diagnostic Function.

23. Measure the voltage during the 1st test with the display indicating OFF (press the No. 1 button to switch from ON to OFF).

NOTE: Measure voltage within 50 seconds after you started the 1st test, or the self-diagnostic test ends.

Is there about 0.2 V?

YES -

Replace the stereo amplifier Service and Repair.

NO -

Go to step 24.

24. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

25. Disconnect audio unit connector C (16P) and stereo amplifier connector A (24P).

26. Check for continuity between audio unit connector C (16P) and stereo amplifier connector A (24P) according to the table.













Is there continuity?

YES -

Go to step 27.

NO -

There is an open in the wire(s) between the audio unit and the stereo amplifier. Replace the affected shielded harness.

27. Check for continuity between audio unit connector C (16P) and body ground according to the table.









Is there continuity?

YES -

There is a short to body ground in the wire(s) between the audio unit and the stereo amplifier. Replace the affected shielded harness.

NO -

Replace the audio unit:

- With navigation Audio Unit Removal/Installation (With Navigation).
- Without navigation Audio Unit Removal/Installation (Without Navigation).

28. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

29. Disconnect audio unit connector C (16P) and stereo amplifier connector A (24P).

30. Check for continuity between audio unit connector C (16P) and stereo amplifier connector A (24P) according to the table.













Is there continuity?

YES -

Go to step 31.

NO -

There is an open in the wire(s) between the audio unit and the stereo amplifier. Replace the affected shielded harness.

31. Check for continuity between body ground and audio unit connector C (16P) terminals No. 9 and No. 10 individually.





Is there continuity?

YES -

There is a short to body ground in the wire(s) between the audio unit and the stereo amplifier. Replace the affected shielded harness.

NO -

Go to step 32.

32. Check for continuity between audio unit connector C (16P) terminals No. 9 and No. 10.





Is there continuity?

YES -

There is a short in the wires between the audio unit and the stereo amplifier. Replace the affected shielded harness.

NO -

Replace the audio unit:

- With navigation Audio Unit Removal/Installation (With Navigation).
- Without navigation Audio Unit Removal/Installation (Without Navigation).

33. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

34. Disconnect audio unit connector C (16P) and stereo amplifier connector A (24P).

35. Check for continuity between audio unit connector C (16P) and stereo amplifier connector A (24P) according to the table.













Is there continuity?

YES -

Go to step 36.

NO -

There is an open in the wire(s) between the audio unit and the stereo amplifier. Replace the affected shielded harness.

36. Check for continuity between body ground and audio unit connector C (16P) terminals No. 1 and No. 2 individually.





Is there continuity?

YES -

There is a short to body ground in the wire(s) between the audio unit and the stereo amplifier. Replace the affected shielded harness.

NO -

Go to step 37.

37. Check for continuity between audio unit connector C (16P) terminals No. 1 and No. 2.





Is there continuity?

YES -

There is a short in the wires between the audio unit and the stereo amplifier. Replace the affected shielded harness.

NO -

Replace the audio unit:

- With navigation Audio Unit Removal/Installation (With Navigation).
- Without navigation Audio Unit Removal/Installation (Without Navigation).

38. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

39. Connect a voltmeter between audio unit connector C (16P) terminal No. 4 and No. 11.

NOTE: Use the voltmeter in AC range.





40. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).

41. Make a loud noise in front of the front active noise cancellation microphone.

Does the voltage change when making a loud noise in front of the microphone?

YES -

Replace the audio unit:

- With navigation Audio Unit Removal/Installation (With Navigation).
- Without navigation Audio Unit Removal/Installation (Without Navigation).

NO -

Go to step 42.

42. Measure the voltage between body ground and front HFL-navigation-ANC microphone 7P connector or front HFL-ANC microphone 7P connector terminals No. 6 and No. 7 individually.





Is there battery voltage?

YES -

Go to step 43.

NO -

If the+B wire does not have voltage, repair an open in the wire between the No. 15 (10 A) fuse in the under-hood fuse relay box and the front HFL-navigation-ANC microphone or the front HFL-ANC microphone. If the ACC wire does not have voltage, repair an open in the wire between the No. 18 (7.5 A) fuse in the driver's under-dash fuse/relay box and the front HFL-navigation-ANC microphone or the front HFL-ANC microphone.

43. Measure the voltage between front HFL-navigation-ANC microphone 7P connector or front HFL-ANC microphone 7P connector terminals No. 1 and body ground.





Is there less than 0.2 V?

YES -

Go to step 44.

NO -

Repair an open or high resistance in the wire between the front HFL-navigation-ANC microphone or the front HFL-ANC microphone and body ground (G501).

44. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

45. Disconnect audio unit connector C (16P) and the front HFL-navigation-ANC microphone 7P connector or the front HFL-ANC microphone 7P connector.

46. Check for continuity between audio unit connector C (16P) terminal No. 4 and front HFL-navigation-ANC microphone 7P connector or front HFL-ANC microphone 7P connector terminal No. 4.





Is there continuity?

YES -

Go to step 47.

NO -

There is an open in the wire between the audio unit and the front HFL-navigation-ANC microphone or the front HFL-ANC microphone. Replace the affected shielded harness.

47. Check for continuity between audio unit connector C (16P) terminal No. 4 and body ground.





Is there continuity?

YES -

There is a short in the wire between the audio unit and the front HFL-navigation-ANC microphone or the front HFL-ANC microphone. Replace the affected shielded harness.

NO -

- With navigation, replace the front HFL-navigation-ANC microphone Front HFL-Navigation-ANC Microphone Removal/Installation.
- Without navigation, replace the front HFL-ANC microphone Front HFL-ANC Microphone Removal/Installation.

48. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

49. Connect a voltmeter between audio unit connector C (16P) terminals No. 4 and No. 11.

NOTE: Use the voltmeter in AC range.





50. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).

51. Make a loud noise in front of the front active noise cancellation microphone.

Does the voltage change when making a loud noise in front of the microphone?

YES -

Replace the audio unit Audio Unit Removal/Installation (Without Navigation).

NO -

Go to step 52.

52. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

53. Disconnect audio unit connector C (16P) and the front active noise cancellation microphone 3P connector.

54. Connect front active noise cancellation microphone 3P connector terminals No. 1 and No. 3 with a jumper wire.






55. Check for continuity between audio unit connector C (16P) terminals No. 4 and No. 11.





Is there continuity?

YES -

Go to step 56.

NO -

There is an open in the wire(s) between the audio unit and the front active noise cancellation microphone. Replace the affected shielded harness.

56. Remove the jumper wire.

57. Check for continuity between audio unit connector C (16P) terminals No. 4 and No. 11.





Is there continuity?

YES -

There is a short in the wires between the audio unit and the front active noise cancellation microphone. Replace the affected shielded harness.

NO -

Go to step 58.

58. Check for continuity between audio unit connector C (16P) terminal No. 4 and body ground.





Is there continuity?

YES -

There is a short to body ground in the wire between the audio unit and the front active noise cancellation microphone. Replace the affected shielded harness.

NO -

Replace the front active noise cancellation microphone Active Noise Cancellation Microphone Removal/Installation.

59. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

60. Connect a voltmeter between audio unit connector C (16P) terminals No. 5 and No. 12.

NOTE: Use the voltmeter in AC range.





61. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).

62. Make a loud noise in front of the rear active noise cancellation microphone.

Does the voltage change when making a loud noise in front of the microphone?

YES -

Replace the audio unit:

- With navigation Audio Unit Removal/Installation (With Navigation).
- Without navigation Audio Unit Removal/Installation (Without Navigation).

NO -

Go to step 63.

63. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

64. Disconnect audio unit connector C (16P) and the rear active noise cancellation microphone 3P connector.

65. Connect rear active noise cancellation microphone 3P connector terminals No. 1 and No. 3 with a jumper wire.






66. Check for continuity between audio unit connector C (16P) terminals No. 5 and No. 12.





Is there continuity?

YES -

Go to step 67.

NO -

There is an open in the wire(s) between the audio unit and the rear active noise cancellation microphone. Replace the affected shielded harness or the passenger's under-dash fuse/relay box Passengers Under-Dash Fuse/Relay Box (Passengers MICU) Removal And Installation.

67. Remove the jumper wire.

68. Check for continuity between audio unit connector C (16P) terminals No. 5 and No. 12.





Is there continuity?

YES -

There is a short in the wires between the audio unit and the rear active noise cancellation microphone. Replace the wire harness or the passenger's under-dash fuse/relay box Passengers Under-Dash Fuse/Relay Box (Passengers MICU) Removal And Installation.

NO -

Go to step 69.

69. Check for continuity between audio unit connector C (16P) terminal No. 5 and body ground.





Is there continuity?

YES -

There is a short to body ground in the wire between the audio unit and the rear active noise cancellation microphone. Replace the shielded harness or the passenger's under-dash fuse/relay box Passengers Under-Dash Fuse/Relay Box (Passengers MICU) Removal And Installation.

NO -

Replace the rear active noise cancellation microphone Active Noise Cancellation Microphone Removal/Installation.

70. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

71. Start the engine, and let it idle.

72. Measure voltage between audio unit connector C (16P) terminal No. 15 and body ground.





Is there about 5 V (pulses)?

YES -

Replace the audio unit:

- With navigation Audio Unit Removal/Installation (With Navigation).
- Without navigation Audio Unit Removal/Installation (Without Navigation).

NO -

Go to step 73.

73. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

74. Jump the SCS line with the HDS.

75. Disconnect ECM/PCM connector A (49P).

76. Disconnect audio unit connector C (16P).

77. Connect ECM/PCM connector A (49P) terminal No. 29 to body ground with a jumper wire.






78. Check continuity between audio unit connector C (16P) terminal No. 15 and body ground.





Is there continuity?

YES -

Go to step 79.

NO -

Repair an open in the wire between the audio unit and the ECM/PCM.

79. Remove the jumper wire.

80. Check continuity between audio unit connector C (16P) terminal No. 15 and body ground.





Is there continuity?

YES -

Repair a short to body ground in the wire between the audio unit and the ECM/PCM.

NO -

Update the ECM/PCM ECM/PCM Update if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good ECM/PCM.

81. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

82. Do the MICU input test to check the B-CAN line between the audio unit and the driver's MICU.

Is the B-CAN line between the audio unit and the driver's MICU OK?

YES -

Replace the audio unit:

- With navigation Audio Unit Removal/Installation (With Navigation).
- Without navigation Audio Unit Removal/Installation (Without Navigation).

NO -

Repair an open in the wire between the audio unit and the driver' s MICU.
