Control System DTCs

VSA DTC Troubleshooting: 86-12, 86-13

DTC 86-12 : F-CAN Communication With ECM/PCM (Engine) Malfunction
DTC 86-13 : F-CAN Communication With PCM (A/T) Malfunction

NOTE:
* Troubleshoot and repair any fuel and emissions DTCs first.
* Before you troubleshoot, record all freeze data and any on-board snapshot, and review the general troubleshooting information Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes.

1. DTC check:

DTC check
-1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).

-2. Clear the DTC with the HDS.

-3. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

-4. Test-drive the vehicle at 6 mph (10 km/h) or more.
NOTE: Drive the vehicle on the road, not on a lift.

-5. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

Is DTC 86-12 or 86-13 indicated?
-YES- If DTC 86-12 or 86-13 are only indicated, go to step 2.
-YES- If DTC 86-11 is also indicated, go to DTC 86-11 VSA System.
-NO- Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Refer to intermittent failures troubleshooting.

2. Open wire check (F_CAN-L, F_CAN-H lines):

Open wire check (F_CAN-L, F_CAN-H lines)
-1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

-2. Short the SCS line with the HDS.

-3. Disconnect the following connectors.





-4. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.














Is there continuity?
-YES- The F_CAN-L, F_CAN-H wires are OK. Go to step 3.
-NO- Repair an open in the wire between the ECM/PCM and the VSA modulator-control unit.

3. ECM/PCM check (update or substitution):

ECM/PCM check (update or substitution)
-1. Reconnect the following connectors.





-2. Update the ECM/PCM if it does not have the latest software ECM/PCM Update, or substitute a known-good ECM/PCM Service and Repair.

-3. Clear the DTC with the HDS.

-4. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

-5. Test-drive the vehicle at 6 mph (10 km/h) or more.
NOTE: Drive the vehicle on the road, not on a lift.

-6. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

Is DTC 86-12 or 86-13 indicated?
-YES- Go to step 4.
-NO- If the ECM/PCM was updated, troubleshooting is complete. If the ECM/PCM was substituted, replace the original ECM/PCM Service and Repair.

4. VSA modulator-control unit check (update):

VSA modulator-control unit check (update)
-1. Update the VSA modulator-control unit if it does not have the latest software Programming and Relearning.

-2. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

-3. Test-drive the vehicle at 6 mph (10 km/h) or more.
NOTE: Drive the vehicle on the road, not on a lift.

-4. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

Is DTC 86-12 or 86-13 indicated?
-YES- Check for loose terminals in the VSA modulator-control unit 22P connector. If the VSA modulator-control unit was updated and the symptom/indication is still present, replace the VSA modulator-control unit Service and Repair.
-NO- Troubleshooting is complete. If any other DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTCs troubleshooting.
