Control System DTCs

SRS DTC Troubleshooting: 11-3x, 11-6x

DTC 11-3x ("x" can be 0 thru 9 or A thru F) : Short to Another Wire or Decreased Resistance in the Driver's Airbag First Inflator
DTC 11-6x ("x" can be 0 thru 9 or A thru F) : Short to Another Wire or Decreased Resistance in the Driver's Airbag Second Inflator

Special Tools Required

*SRS Inflator Simulator 07SAZ-TB4011A
*SRS Simulator Lead J 070AZ-SNAA100
*SRS Short Canceller 070AZ-SAA0100
NOTE:
* Before doing this troubleshooting procedure, find out if the vehicle was in a collision. If so, verify that all the required components were replaced with new components, of the correct part number, and that they were properly installed Service and Repair.
* Before doing this troubleshooting procedure, review SRS Precautions and Procedures Service and Repair, General Troubleshooting Information Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes, and Battery Terminal Disconnection and Reconnection Procedures.
* Before replacing the SRS unit, check the SRS unit software version with the HDS. If the software version is not the latest, update the SRS unit software Programming and Relearning, and retest.

1. Problem verification:

Problem verification
-1. Clear the DTCs with the HDS Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes.

-2. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II), then wait for 10 seconds.

-3. Check for DTCs with the HDS Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes.

Is DTC 11-3x or 11-6x indicated?
-YES- The failure is duplicated. Go to step 2.
-NO- Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Go to Troubleshooting Intermittent Failures Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes. If another DTC is indicated, troubleshoot the DTC.

2. Driver's airbag inflator check:

-1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

-2. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery, then wait at least 3 minutes.

-3. Remove the access panel (A) from the steering wheel, then disconnect the driver's airbag inflator 4P connector (B) on the cable reel harness.





-4. Connect the terminals of SRS simulator lead J to the SRS inflator simulator (2 Ohms connectors), then connect SRS simulator lead J to the driver's airbag inflator 4P connector on the cable reel harness.

-5. Reconnect the negative cable to the battery.

-6. Clear the DTCs with the HDS Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes.

-7. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II), then wait for 10 seconds.

-8. Check for DTCs with the HDS Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes.

Is DTC 11-3x or 11-6x indicated?
-YES- Go to step 3.
-NO- Short to another wire in the driver's airbag first or second inflator; replace the driver's airbag Drivers Airbag Removal and Installation, then clear the DTC.

3. Cable reel check:

Cable reel check
-1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

-2. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery, then wait at least 3 minutes.

-3. Remove the column covers Steering Column Cover Removal/Installation.

-4. Disconnect cable reel connector B (4P) on the dashboard wire harness.





-5. Connect the terminals of SRS simulator lead J to the SRS inflator simulator (2 Ohms connectors), then connect SRS simulator lead J to cable reel connector B (4P) on the dashboard wire harness.

-6. Reconnect the negative cable to the battery.

-7. Clear the DTCs with the HDS Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes.

-8. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II), then wait for 10 seconds.

-9. Check for DTCs with the HDS Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes.

Is DTC 11-3x or 11-6x indicated?
-YES- Go to step 4.
-NO- Short to another wire in the cable reel; replace the cable reel Service and Repair, then clear the DTC.

4. Shorted wire check (LA1+ line to LA1- line, LA2+ line to LA2- line):

-1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

-2. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery, then wait at least 3 minutes.

-3. Disconnect the following connector.





-4. Disconnect the SRS inflator simulator from SRS simulator lead J. Do not disconnect SRS simulator lead J from cable reel connector B (4P) on the dashboard wire harness.

-5. Connect the SRS short cancellers (070AZ-SAA0100) to SRS unit connector A (39P) terminals No. 3 and No. 4, and terminals No. 7 and No. 8 Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes.

-6. Measure the resistance of the test points.














Is there an open circuit, or at least 1 MOhms?
-YES- Faulty SRS unit or poor connection at SRS unit connector A (39P) and the SRS unit. Check the connection between the connector and the SRS unit. If the connection is OK, replace the SRS unit Service and Repair. If the DTC does not clear, replace the dashboard wire harness.
-NO- Short to another wire in the dashboard wire harness; replace the dashboard wire harness, then clear the DTC.
