DTC Troubleshooting: P0011
DTC P0011 : VTC System Malfunction
NOTE: Before you troubleshoot, record all freeze data and any on-board snapshot, and review the general troubleshooting information How To Troubleshoot The Fuel And Emissions Systems.
1. Oil pressure check:

-1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
-2. Clear the DTC with the HDS.
-3. Start the engine.
-4. Watch the low oil pressure indicator with the engine running.
Is the low oil pressure indicator on?
-YES- Check the oil pressure Testing and Inspection, then do the repair verification.
-NO- Go to step 2.
2. Problem verification:

-1. Do the VTC TEST in the INSPECTION MENU with the HDS.
Is the result OK?
-YES- Go to step 3.
-NO- Go to step 5.
3. VTC system check (VTC STATUS check with the HDS):

-1. Test-drive at a steady speed between 19-38 mph (30-60 km/h) for 10 minutes.
-2. Check the VTC STATUS in the DATA LIST with the HDS.
Does it indicate ON?
-YES- Go to step 4.
-NO- Go to step 2 and recheck.
4. VTC system check (OBD STATUS check):

-1. Test-drive at a steady speed between 19-38 mph (30-60 km/h) for 10 minutes.
-2. Monitor the OBD STATUS for DTC P0011 in the DTCs MENU with the HDS.
Does the HDS indicate FAILED?
-YES- Go to step 5.
-NO- If the HDS indicates PASSED, intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. If the screen indicates NOT COMPLETED, go to step 2 and recheck.
5. VTC strainer visual check:

-1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
-2. Remove the auto-tensioner. Drive Belt Auto-Tensioner Removal and Installation
-3. Remove the VTC strainer (A), and check it for clogging.
Is the strainer OK?
-YES- Go to step 6.
-NO- Clean the VTC strainer, replace the engine oil filter Service and Repair and the engine oil Service and Repair, then do the repair verification.
6. VTC oil control valve operation check:

-1. Test the VTC oil control solenoid valve. VTC Oil Control Solenoid Valve Removal, Installation, and Test
Is the VTC oil control solenoid valve OK?
-YES- Check the VTC system oil passages, and clean them if needed, then do the repair verification.
-NO- Replace the VTC oil control solenoid valve VTC Oil Control Solenoid Valve Removal, Installation, and Test, then do the repair verification.
Repair verification (OBD STATUS check):
-1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
-2. Reset the ECM with the HDS. How To Troubleshoot The Fuel And Emissions Systems
-3. Do the ECM idle learn procedure. ECM/PCM Idle Learn Procedure
-4. Do the CKP pattern clear/CKP pattern learn procedure How To Troubleshoot The Fuel And Emissions Systems.
-5. Do the VTC TEST in the INSPECTION MENU with the HDS.
-6. Monitor the OBD STATUS for DTC P0011 in the DTCs MENU with the HDS.
Does the HDS indicate PASSED, FAILED, or NOT COMPLETED?
-PASSED- Troubleshooting is complete. If any other Pending or Confirmed DTCs were indicated, go to the indicated DTC's troubleshooting.
-FAILED- Go to step 1 and recheck.
-NOT COMPLETED- Check the OBD STATUS again.
