DTC Troubleshooting: P0351, P0352, P0353, P0354

DTC P0351 : No. 1 Cylinder Ignition Coil Circuit Malfunction
DTC P0352 : No. 2 Cylinder Ignition Coil Circuit Malfunction
DTC P0353 : No. 3 Cylinder Ignition Coil Circuit Malfunction
DTC P0354 : No. 4 Cylinder Ignition Coil Circuit Malfunction

NOTE: Before you troubleshoot, record all freeze data and any on-board snapshot, and review the general troubleshooting information How To Troubleshoot The Fuel And Emissions Systems.

1. Problem verification:

Problem verification
-1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).

-2. Clear the DTC with the HDS.

-3. Start the engine.

-4. Check for Pending or Confirmed DTCs with the HDS.

Is DTC P0351, P0352, P0353, and/or P0354 indicated?
-YES- The failure is duplicated. Go to step 2.
-NO- Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the ignition coil and the ECM.

2. Ignition coil check:

Ignition coil check
-1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

-2. Exchange the ignition coil from the problem cylinder with one from another cylinder.

-3. Start the engine.

-4. Check for Pending or Confirmed DTCs with the HDS.

Is DTC indicated at the exchanged position?
-YES- Replace the faulty ignition coil Service and Repair, then do the repair verification.
-NO- Go to step 3.

3. Shorted wire check (IG1_IG_COIL line):

Shorted wire check (IG1_IG_COIL line)
-1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

-2. Check the following fuse.

Are the fuses OK?
-YES- Go to step 4.
-NO- Repair a short in the +B_IG_COIL wire between the ignition coil and the No. A16 (15 A) fuse. Also replace the No. A16 (15 A) fuse, then do the repair verification.

4. Relay check:

Relay check
-1. Remove the ignition coil relay (A) from the under-hood fuse/relay box.

-2. Test the ignition coil relay Testing and Inspection.

Is the relay OK?
-YES- Go to step 5.
-NO- Replace the ignition coil relay, then do the repair verification.

5. Open wire check (IG1_IG_COIL lines):

Open wire check (IG1_IG_COIL lines)
-1. Reinstall the ignition coil relay.

-2. Disconnect the following connector(s).

-3. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).

-4. Measure the voltage between test points 1 and 2.

Is there battery voltage?
-YES- The IG1_IG_COIL wire is OK. Go to step 6.
-NO- Repair an open in the IG1_IG_COIL wire between the ignition coil and the ignition coil relay, then do the repair verification.

6. Open wire check (PG1 lines):

Open wire check (PG1 line)
-1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

-2. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

Is there continuity?
-YES- The PG1 wire is OK. Go to step 7.
-NO- Repair an open in the PG1 wire between the ignition coil and G101, then do the repair verification.

7. Shorted wire check (IGN_PULSE lines):

Shorted wire check (IGN_PULSE lines)
-1. Jump the SCS line with the HDS.

-2. Disconnect the following connector.

-3. Check for continuity between body ground and the appropriate ECM connector terminal of the problem ignition coil (see table).

Is there continuity?
-YES- Repair a short in the IGN_PULSE wire between the ECM and the ignition coil, then do the repair verification.
-NO- The IGN_PULSE wires are not shorted. Go to step 8.

8. Open wire check (IGN_PULSE lines):

Open wire check (IGN_PULSE lines)
-1. Check for continuity between appropriate ignition coil 3P connector terminal No. 1 and the appropriate ECM connector terminal of the problem ignition coil (see table).

Is there continuity?
-YES- The IGN_PULSE wires are OK. Update the ECM ECM/PCM Update if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good ECM Service and Repair, then do the repair verification.
-NO- Repair an open in the IGN_PULSE wire between the ECM and the ignition coil, then do the repair verification.

Repair verification:

-1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

-2. Reconnect all connectors.

-3. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).

-4. Reset the ECM with the HDS How To Troubleshoot The Fuel And Emissions Systems.

-5. Do the ECM idle learn procedure ECM/PCM Idle Learn Procedure.

-6. Check for Pending or Confirmed DTCs with the HDS.

Is DTC P0351, P0352, P0353 and/or P0354 indicated?
-YES- Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the ignition coil and the ECM. If the ECM was updated, substitute a known-good ECM Service and Repair, then recheck. If the ECM was substituted, go to step 1.
-NO- Troubleshooting is complete. If the ECM was substituted, replace the original ECM Service and Repair. If any other Pending or Confirmed DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTC's troubleshooting.
