Inspection

Cam Chain Inspection

Inspection

1. Cam Chain - Inspection

1. Rotate the crankshaft pulley two turns clockwise.

2. Set the No. 1 piston at top dead center (TDC). The punch mark (A) on the VTC actuator and the punch mark (B) on the exhaust camshaft sprocket should be at the top. Align the TDC marks (C) on the VTC actuator and the exhaust camshaft sprocket.

3. Measure the clearance between the cam chain (A) and the tensioner arm (B) with the cam chain inspection gauge.

Removal

1. Engine Oil - Replacement

1. Remove the drain bolt (A), and drain the engine oil.

2. Reinstall the drain bolt with a new washer (B) and torque to specification.

2. Steering Joint Cover

1. Remove the steering joint cover (A).

3. Steering Column Lower Slide Shaft - Hold

1. Set the steering column to the center tilt position, and to the center telescopic position.

2. Hold the lower slide shaft (A) on the column with a piece of wire (B) between the joint yoke (C) of the lower slide shaft and the joint yoke (D) of the upper shaft to prevent the lower slider shaft from pulling out.

4. Steering Joint Bolt - Loosen

1. Loosen the steering joint bolt (A).

5. Steering Wheel Hold

1. Center the steering wheel spoke angle.

2. Install a commercially available steering wheel holder tool (A).

6. Steering Joint - Disconnection

1. Remove the steering joint bolt (A).

2. Disconnect the steering joint (B) from the pinion shaft.

NOTE:
* If the center guide (C) is in place and has not moved, leave it in place.
* If the center guide has come off, discard it.

7. Front Stabilizer Ball Joint - Disconnection, Both Lower Arm Side

1. Remove the flange nut (A) while holding the respective joint pin (B) with a hex wrench (C).

2. Remove the stabilizer link (D).

8. Lower Arm Joint - Disconnection, Both Knuckle Side

1. Remove the flange bolt and the self-locking nuts on both sides.

2. Separate the lower arm using a pry bar on both sides.

9. Engine Support Hanger

1. Attach the universal lifting eyelet to the cylinder head.

2. Install the engine support hanger as shown.

3. Attach the hook to the slotted hole in the universal lifting eyelet.

4. Tighten the wing nut (A) by hand, and lift and support the engine/transmission.

NOTE: Be careful when working around the windshield.

10. Lower Torque Rod - Disconnection

1. Remove the lower torque rod mounting bolts.

11. Subframe Support

1. Attach the subframe adapter to the front subframe by looping the belt (A) over the front of the front subframe (B), then secure the belt with its stop (C).

2. Raise the jack and line up the slots in the subframe adapter arms with the bolt holes on the jack base, then securely attach them with four bolts.

12. Front Sub Frame - Move

1. Loosen the mid stiffener mounting bolt (A) on both sides.

FRONT

REAR

2. Loosen the front subframe mounting bolts (A) on both sides.

13. Lower Torque Rod Bracket

1. Remove the lower torque rod bracket.

14. Clutch Cover

1. Remove the clutch case cover and the transmission mounting bolts.

15. Oil Pan Assembly

1. Remove the bolts securing the oil pan.

2. Using a flat blade screwdriver, separate the oil pan from the engine block in the places shown.

3. Remove the oil pan.

16. Cam Chain Case Peripheral Assembly

1. Remove the harness clamp.

17. VTC Oil Control Solenoid Valve

1. Remove the ground cable (A).

2. Remove the VTC oil control solenoid valve (B).

18. Crankshaft Pulley

1. Hold the pulley with the holder handle (A) and the crankshaft pulley holder (B).

2. Remove the bolt with a socket, 19 mm (C) and a breaker bar, then remove the crankshaft pulley.

19. Upper Torque Rod

1. Remove the upper torque rod.

20. Side Engine Mount

1. Remove the ground cable (A), the side engine mount bracket (B), and the side engine mount (C).

21. Side Engine Mount Bracket, Engine Side

1. Remove the side engine mount bracket.

22. Cam Chain Case

1. Remove the cam chain case (A) and the spacer (B).

23. Cam Chain Auto-Tensioner

1. Loosely install the crankshaft pulley.

2. Turn the crankshaft counterclockwise to compress the auto-tensioner.

3. Rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise to align the holes on the lock (A) and the auto-tensioner (B), then insert a 1.2 mm (3/64 in) diameter pin (C) into the holes. Turn the crankshaft clockwise to secure the pin.

NOTE: If the holes in the lock and the auto-tensioner do not align, continue to rotating the crankshaft counterclockwise until the holes align, then install the pin.

4. Remove the auto-tensioner.

24. Cam Chain Tensioner Arm and Cam Chain Guide

1. Remove cam chain guide B.

2. Remove cam chain guide A and the tensioner arm (B).

Inspection

1. Oil Pump Chain - Inspection

1. Check the teeth on the crankshaft sprocket, the VTC actuator, and the exhaust camshaft sprocket for wear and damage. If any of them are worn or damaged, replace if necessary.

2. Check the oil passage on the auto-tensioner for clogs. If the auto-tensioner is clogged, replace it.

3. Measure the length of the oil pump chain auto-tensioner rod.
