DESCRIPTION:
This bulletin provides information relating to a change in 1999 MY - 2002 MY Sonata rear drum brakes to reduce brake "squeal/squeak" noise. From November 6, 2001 production, stiffeners have been added to the brake shoes and a dust ring has been added to the backing plate. These new parts may be used as a field fix for in-use vehicles built before November 6, 2001.
NOTE
For in-use vehicles, replace both shoes and backing plates to reduce brake "squeal/squeak" noise.
NOTE
The following pictures show the difference between old and new parts.

PARTS INFORMATION:
PROCEDURE:
NOTE
^ Verify that the vehicle is affected by identifying the production date range and VIN.
^ Apply this procedure to both the right and left sides.
1. Raise and support the vehicle on a hoist.
2. Remove the rear wheels.
3. Remove the brake drum retaining screw.
4. Remove the brake drum.
5. Remove the brake shoes from the backing plate.
6. Disconnect and cap the brake hydraulic line.
7. Remove four bolts holding the hub and bearing assembly.
8. Remove the hub and bearing assembly.
9. Remove the retaining clip securing the parking brake cable casing to the backing plate.
10. Remove the backing plate.
11. Transfer the wheel cylinder from the old backing plate to the new backing plate.
Wheel cylinder tightening torque: 9-13 lb.ft (12-18 Nm, 120-180 Kg.cm)
12. Position the backing plate onto the rear axle carrier.
13. Reinstall the hub and bearing assembly.
Tightening torque: 52-62 lb.ft (70-90 Nm, 700-900 Kg.cm)
14. Apply the specified grease to the shoe and backing plate and the shoe and anchor plate contact surfaces.
Recommended grease: Multipurpose grease SAE J310,NLGI No.2
15. Install the new brake shoes.
NOTE
All stock in the PDCs are the new shoes.
16. Reconnect the parking brake cable.
17. Reconnect the brake hydraulic line.
18. Adjust the outside dimension of the shoes by turning the auto adjuster to achieve 8.96-8.98 in (227.6-228.1 mm).
19. Reinstall the brake drum and the drum retaining screw.
20. Reinstall the wheel.
Wheel nut torque: 67-81 lb.ft (90-110 Nm, 900-1000Kg.cm)
21. Repeat procedure for the other rear side.
22. Bleed the brake hydraulic system.
23. Adjust the master cylinder fluid level.
24. Lower the vehicle.
25. Adjust the parking brake stroke if necessary to 8-9 clicks at 44 lbs. (20 kg).
NOTE
The parking brake adjustment is under the center console storage box.
26. Test drive the vehicle.

NOTE
Brake pads are covered for 12 months/12,000 miles.
Brake pads and linings are considered wear items.
