DUAL MASS FLYWHEEL
SERVICE PRECAUTIONS
Only available in the 2.7 L V6 Tiburon and the 2.4 L Fe the Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF) has many advantages such as:
^ Reduced gear rattle noise at idle and cruise.
^ Smoother shift feel at low speed driving.
^ Reduced "booming" noise at low RPM during acceleration.
^ Reduced noise during acceleration.
^ Reduced body shock and vibration due to "tip-in & out" of the accelerator pedal.
^ Reduced engine vibration.
^ Improved durability of MTM synchronizers.
The main function of the DMF is to absorb engine vibrations before they are transmitted to the driveline where they may create gear rattle. To achieve this, the conventional flywheel is divided into two sections: the
primary and the secondary. The primary section is attached to the crankshaft and the secondary section attaches to the clutch. The primary and secondary sections are connected through torsional springs to isolate the engine vibrations.
PRECAUTIONS
For the Dual Mass Flywheel to work properly it is precision machined and balanced at the factory Therefore the following service precautions must be followed:
^ DO NOT machine or resurface the flywheel of a Dual Mass Flywheel as it may affect its balance. If the Dual Mass Flywheel is damaged, REPLACE it.
^ ALWAYS replace the flywheel attaching bolts when changing the Dual Mass Flywheel.
NOTE:
The flywheel, the clutch disc, the pressure plate, and the starter motor specified for a vehicle with a Dual Mass Flywheel are unique components designed to work specifically with the Dual Mass Flywheel. DO NOT install components that are not specified for a vehicle with a DMF
