Rear and Lower Area Service Procedure
Rear and Lower Areas (Hatches, Rear Glass, Seats, Floor, Center Console, Trunk)Includes: Front and rear seat assemblies, carpeted areas, door panels, glass and door mounted controls, parcel shelf, trunk area and interior mounted stop lamp (CHMSL).
NOTE: Read through all of the incidents listed that apply to the incident area in the vehicle.Some repairs may need to be done in combination with others.
Incident 1: Rattle from the front door (1).
Verify:
This noise may occur when the door closes.
Isolate:
This incident may be duplicated by knocking or tapping on the door finisher or the door outer panel, around the side guard molding, by hand. This incident may be caused by the side impact pad (see Figure 1) contacting the inside of the door finisher.
Repair:
1. Remove the door finisher.
a. Remove the outer pull handle.
b. Remove the pull handle securing screws.
c. Remove the door finisher, disconnecting the power window switch harness.
2. Reattach the side impact pad to the inside of the door finisher using 3M Super Weatherstrip Adhesive (3M P/N 051135 08008) or equivalent.
3. Reassemble in reverse order of removal.
Recheck:
Test the vehicle as described above to ensure the repair is complete.
Incident 2: Rattle from front door (2).
Verify:
This noise may occur when the door closes or when driving over pavement or rough roads.
Isolate:
This incident may be duplicated by tapping or knocking on the door finisher or the door outer panel, around the side guard molding. This incident may be caused by the door speaker harness contacting the inside of the door finisher.
Repair:
1. Remove the door finisher.
a. Remove the outer pull handle.
b. Remove the pull handle securing screws.
c. Remove the door finisher, disconnecting the power window switch harness.
2. Remove the speaker.
3. Cover the speaker harness (see Figure 2) with urethane pad P/N 76268-9E005.
4. Reassemble in reverse order of removal.
Recheck:
Test the vehicle as described above to ensure the repair is complete.
Incident 3: Rattle from right front door.
Verify:
This noise may occur when the door closes or when driving over pavement or rough roads.
Isolate:
This incident may be duplicated by tapping or knocking on the door finisher or the door outer panel, around the side guard molding. This incident may be caused by the door latch/lock rods (see Figure 3) contacting the protector plate.
Repair:
1. Remove the door finisher.
a. Remove the outer pull handle.
b. Remove the pull handle securing screws.
c. Remove the door finisher, disconnecting the power window switch harness.
2. Attach urethane pad P/N 76268-9E005 to the inside of the protector plate at the point where the lock/latch rods are contacting it.
3. Reassemble in reverse order of removal.
NOTE: Make sure the door latch, latch handle and door lock operate properly.
Recheck:
Test the vehicle as described above to ensure the repair is complete.
Incident 4: Creak from rear seat back area.
Verify:
This noise may occur when driving over pavement or rough roads at speeds over 15 MPH.
Isolate:
This incident may be duplicated by tapping or knocking on rear parcel shelf. This incident may be caused by intermittent contact between the rear seat back support and the edge of the body structure (see Figure 4).
Repair:
1. Remove the rear seat support panel garnish (U-shaped trim).
2. Use an appropriate tool to widen the gap between the rear seat back support panel and the body structure.
Recheck:
Test the vehicle as described above to ensure the repair is complete.
Incident 5: Buzz from rear of passenger compartment.
Verify:
This noise may occur when driving over pavement or rough roads at speeds over 15 MPH.
Isolate:
This incident may be duplicated by tapping or knocking on rear parcel shelf. This incident may be caused by intermittent contact between the rear parcel shelf and the speaker amplifier (see Figure 5).
Repair:
1. Fold down the rear seat backs.
2. Remove the left and right C-pillar garnishes
3. Remove the rear parcel shelf
4. Remove the speaker amplifier.
5. Apply felt cloth tape P/N 68239-13E00 at the points of contact between the speaker amplifier and the rear parcel shelf.
6. Reassemble in reverse order of removal.
Recheck:
Test the vehicle as described above to ensure the repair is complete.
Incident 6: Rattle noise coming from inside front seat headrest.
Verify:
This noise may occur when driving over pavement or rough roads at speeds over 15 MPH.
Isolate:
This incident may disappear when the headrest is pushed or pulled on while the incident is occurring. The incident may be caused by contact between the headrest rods (see Figure 6) and the lock holders in the seat back.
Repair:
1. Remove the headrest.
2. Slightly expand or shorten the distance between the tips of the headrest rods by hand.
Recheck:
Test the vehicle as described above to ensure the repair is complete.
Incident 7: Rattle noise from left side of trunk.
Verify:
This noise may occur when driving over pavement or rough roads at speeds over 15 MPH.
Isolate:
The incident may be caused by intermittent contact between the rear fender inside panel and the fuel lid release cable. This incident may be duplicated by tapping the release cable.
Repair:
NOTE: If needed, refer to the "Trunk Room Trim" section of the appropriate Service Manual for details to steps 1 through 3 and step 5.
1. Remove the trunk rear panel.
2. Remove the trunk rear finisher.
3. Remove the trunk left side finisher.
4. Apply urethane pad (P/N 76268-9E005) to the fuel lid release cable (see Figure 7).
NOTE: When removing or installing the trunk panel or finishers handle them carefully to keep dirt out and avoid damage.
5. Reinstall the trunk finishers and rear panel.
Recheck:
Test the vehicle as described above to ensure the repair is complete.
