^ Raise the vehicle on a ramp.

^ Disconnect the multi-plug from the steering rack (1 Fig. 2) -6 cyl, (1 Fig. 3) -12 cyl.

^ Remove the steering rack ball joints.

^ Unscrew and remove the steering rack gaiter heat shield securing bolts and remove both heat shields (Fig. 2) -12 cyl only, (drivers side LH drive illustrated).

^ Remove the bolt (1 Fig. 4) and nut (2 Fig. 4) securing the lower column (3 Fig. 4) to the steering rack pinion (4 Fig. 4).

^ Remove the rack feed pipe to sump mounting bracket securing screw.

^ Place a suitable drain tray in position below the steering rack pinion / pipes.

^ Slacken the feed pipe to rack union nut, disconnect the pipe from the rack and allow to drain.

Note: To keep the system clean and prevent the ingress of any dirt / dust, fit blanking plugs to the rack and pipes whenever they are disconnected.

^ Remove the return pipe to rack tube securing clip.

^ Disconnect the lower steering column from the rack pinion.

^ Remove and discard the steering rack mounting bolts, and remove the rack from the vehicle.

^ Retrieve the steering rack spacing washers -6 cyl. only.

Assembly

^ Check that the new rack is centralized.

Warning: NEW STEERING RACKS ARE FITTED WITH A CENTRALIZING PIN. WHEN THE RACK HAS BEEN FITTED, THE PIN MUST BE REMOVED AND REPLACED WITH AN ACCESS PLUG AND SEALING WASHER (4 FIG. 1 -12 CYL; 4 FIG. 2 -6 CYL).

^ Fit and align the rack to its mounting position on the vehicle.

Note: Steering rack securing bolts should be used only once. When fitting a rack always use new bolts.

^ Refit the steering rack spacing washers -6 cyl. only.

^ Fit, but do not tighten, the rack lower mounting bolts.

^ Align and connect the lower steering column to the steering rack pinion.

^ Fit, but do not tighten, the rack upper mounting bolts.

^ Align the rack assembly and final tighten the securing bolts.
