Installing the Upper Steering Columns
1. Insert the lock barrel into the replacement steering column by rocking the key until the barrel engages the lock mechanism. Make sure that the barrel is fully seated and that the lock pin has engaged properly.2. Turn the ignition key off and remove the key.
3. Position the switch gear mounting bracket and connect the connectors. Secure the bracket using the four screws.
4. Install the upper cowl to the replacement steering column.
5. Position the upper steering column into the universal joint.
6. Finger tighten the two nuts to secure the steering column to the upper bracket.
7. Install and tighten the two nuts and bolts that secure the lower end of the steering column to the bracket. Torque to 15 lb. ft. (20 Nm.) Fully tighten the upper mounting nuts to 15 lb. ft. (20 Nm.)
8. Reconnect the following connectors:
Tilt motor to fascia harness
Ignition switch to fascia harness
Airbag harness to cabin harness
Direction indicator switch gear to fascia harness
Windshield wiper and washer switch gear to fascia harness
Dimmer module to fascia harness
Audible warning speaker to harness
9. Pass the horn and airbag harnesses through the steering wheel opening.
10. Position the steering wheel on the steering shaft and tighten the retaining bolt to 30 lb. ft. (40 Nm.)
11. Reconnect the horn harness connector.
12. Reconnect the airbag harness and position the airbag module in the steering wheel.
13. Turn the steering wheel 90° from the straight ahead position. Tighten one airbag module bolt. Turn the steering wheel 180° for access to the other bolt. Tighten the other bolt.
14. Ensure that the front wheels are in the straight ahead position and tighten the nut and bolt of the universal joint with the top of the airbag housing in the horizontal position. Torque to 13 lb. ft. (18 Nm.)
15. Reconnect the harness connectors for the instrument dimmer control and column motor.
16. Secure the lower cowl to the steering column with the two screws.
17. Reinstall the dash liner on the driver's side.
18. Reconnect the battery negative cable.
19. Return the driver's seat to the original position and reset the clock.
