Catalytic Converter: Description and Operation

Exhaust System

Location:

All vehicles are fitted with a stainless steel exhaust system consisting of:
- Two catalytic converters.
- Intermediate muffler assembly
- Two muffler and tailpipe assemblies

The exhaust system of the 3.0 L and the 4.0 L are similar in design but utilize different internal elements to achieve a distinct exhaust note for each variant.

Three Way Catalytic Converters
The three way catalytic converters consist of palladium/rhodium coated elements. These elements are utilized to control the emissions of hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) from the engine.

The catalytic converters are connected to the exhaust manifold by a two bolt self-sealing flange. Exhaust jointing compound must not be applied to these self-sealing joints due to the possibility of catalytic converter contamination.
