DETAIL

It is possible within the above VIN range for the EAS compressor to be periodically heard inside the vehicle as a droning noise. Stopping the compressor, which can be done by depressing the dash mounted EAS rocker switch 'down' will help to confirm that the noise is coming from the compressor. The noise in most cases is due to the mounting of the compressor and NOT an internal fault in the compressor itself.

From VIN SA314000, revised dished washers were introduced to mount the compressor. These parts were introduced to cure the noise problem, and are now available from LRNA Parts.

ACTION REQUIRED

Upon customer complaint of a compressor noise noted from within the vehicle, follow the procedure detailed below.

PARTS INFORMATION

STC 3068 dished washers 6 required.

STC 828 Rubber mounts 2 required.

PROCEDURE

Refer to the workshop manual section 60, air Compressor.

Procedure

1) Remove cover from air supply unit under the hood.

2) Remove three compressor mount nuts.

NOTE:
Take care not to unscrew the studs from the plastic box when removing nuts. If studs do unscrew, then remove studs from rubber mounts and re-thread into box until height is 25/32" (20 mm) as shown in the diagram A.

3) Remove top washers, lift compressor off its mounts. Remove bottom washers and ensure plastic spacer on single rear mount is retained.

NOTE:
If compressor will not lift off its mounts, then press rubber mounts out of compressor and wind them off the studs.

4) Place new bottom washers on all three studs (dished downwards).

5) Replace two front mounts only with new parts (STC828). Do not reused the front mounts. Retain the original rear rubber mount.

6) Place compressor back on studs.

7) Place new top washers on all three studs (dished upwards).

8) Replace nuts using Loctite 242, torque to 13-18 lbf.in (1.5 to 2.0 Nm).

NOTE:
Do not over-tighten nuts or fit dished washers incorrectly. This will reduce the clearance between the washers in which the compressor is meant to vibrate when running. If this happens the droning noise may re-occur.

9) Discard old washers and rubber mounts.

NOTE:
Diagram B illustrates correctly installed washers and rubber mount.
