Inoperative Seat Back Functions

AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:

DISCOVERY SERIES II (LT) ALL

SITUATION:

DAMAGED HARNESS CAUSES FUSES TO BLOW AND SEAT BACK CONTROLS TO FAIL

The seat back lumbar/squab recline wiring harness may be routed in a way that allows an unprotected area of the harness to come in contact with the seat frame. As a result, damaged wire insulation can allow the circuit to ground causing blown fuses in positions 2, 3 or 4 in the satellite fusebox under the seat. Seat functions controlled by these fuses will be lost.

RESOLUTION:

PROTECT DAMAGED WIRING

To resolve the symptoms outlined above, repair the harness and install a section of convoluted tube to protect the wire from shorting. Secure the tubing in position on the harness using electrical tape.

^ Black electrical tape
^ Convoluted tube (black, 10 mm diameter, 60 mm length)

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

PROTECT SEAT WIRING HARNESS

1. Refer to WSM Section 76 for procedures covering removal of the seat covering.

CAUTION:
Seat cover must be removed carefully to insure that covering is not damaged.





2. Remove the seat cover enough to allow lifting of seat back (squab) foam and access to the wiring harness leading to connector C0974 as shown in Figure 1.

3. Locate portion of damaged wiring harness.

4. Repair harness as required.

5. Fit convoluted tubing and tape tubing to wiring harness, protecting harness from seat frame edges in the area where damage had occurred.

6. Replace blown fuses.

7. Verify that seat controls function properly.

8. Reposition seat back (squab) foam and install seat covering and trim.
