Removal
NOTE: If the parking brake shoes or the brake discs have been removed for access to other components then DO NOT carry out the bedding in procedure.
1. CAUTION: Do not turn the ignition on when the parking brake service mode has been set, this will result in the parking brake being released from the service mode.
Enter the parking brake into the service mode.
^ Turn the ignition key to position 11.
^ Apply, and hold, the Foot brake.
^ Apply, and hold, the parking brake switch to the RELEASE position.
^ Turn the ignition key to position II and remove the key.
^ Release the Foot brake.
^ Release the parking brake switch.
WARNING: Do not work on or under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always support the vehicle on safety stands.
^ Raise and support the vehicle.
3. Remove the wheels and tires.
4. Remove the brake caliper lower bolt.
5. Remove the brake pads.
^ Rotate the brake caliper upwards.
^ Remove the 2 clips.
6. Remove the brake caliper upper bolt.
7. Tie the brake caliper housing aside.
8. Remove the brake caliper anchor plate.
9. Release the parking brake shoe adjustment.
^ Remove the plug from the access hole in the brake disc.
^ Using a suitable tool, rotate the brake shoe adjuster to release the adjustment.
^ Install the access plug.
10. Remove the LH rear brake disc.
^ Remove the Torx screw.
11. Remove the adjuster and return spring.
^ Release the parking brake shoe adjuster to the minimum adjustment.
12. WARNING: Make sure the return spring and the adjuster spring are correctly installed to the primary shoe.
Remove the primary brake shoe.
^ Remove the hold-down spring and retaining pin.
^ Pivot the shoe to release it from the spreader plate and return spring.
13. Remove the spreader plate and spring.
14. Remove the return spring.
15. Remove the secondary brake shoe.
^ Remove the hold-down spring and retaining pin.
^ Release the parking brake cable.
^ Disconnect the parking brake cable retaining spring from the brake shoe lever.
16. Remove the RH rear brake disc.
17. Remove the adjuster and return spring.
^ Release the parking brake shoe adjuster to the minimum adjustment.
18. WARNING: Make sure the return spring and the adjuster spring are correctly installed to the primary shoe.
Remove the primary brake shoe.
^ Remove the hold-down spring and retaining pin.
^ Pivot the shoe to release it from the spreader plate and return spring.
19. Remove the spreader plate and spring.
20. Remove the return spring.
21. Remove the secondary brake shoe.
^ Remove the hold-down spring and retaining pin.
^ Release the parking brake cable.
^ Disconnect the parking brake cable retaining spring from the brake shoe lever.
Installation
1. WARNING: Do not use compressed air to clean brake components. Dust from friction materials can be harmful if inhaled.
Clean the backing plate and apply grease to the brake shoe contacts.
2. Clean both adjusters and set to the minimum extension.
3. CAUTION: Make sure the retaining clip is correctly installed to the brake shoe.
CAUTION: Make sure the brake shoe spring is not over stretched.
Install the secondary brake shoe.
^ Connect the parking brake cable.
^ Connect the parking brake cable retaining spring to the brake shoe lever, making sure the spring is not twisted.
^ Install the hold-down spring and retaining pin.
4. Using a suitable tie strap, tie back the spreader plate spring.
5. CAUTION: Make sure the retaining clip is correctly installed to the brake shoe.
CAUTION: Make sure the brake shoe spring is not over stretched.
Install the primary brake shoe.
^ Install the spreader plate and the spring.
^ Install the return spring.
^ Install the hold-down spring and retaining pin.
6. CAUTION: Make sure the brake shoe spring is not over stretched.
Install the brake shoe adjuster.
7. Remove and discard the spreader plate spring tie strap.
8. Make sure the brake disc and hub mating surfaces are clean.
9. Install the LH rear brake disc.
^ Tighten the Torx screw to 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.).
10. WARNING: Do not use compressed air to clean brake components. Dust from friction materials can be harmful if inhaled.
Clean the caliper housing and anchor plate using brake cleaning fluid.
11. Install the anchor plate.
^ Tighten the bolts to 115 Nm (85 ft. lbs.).
12. Install the brake caliper housing and fit the top bolt.
^ Tighten the bolt to 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.).
13. Install the brake pads.
^ Install the 2 clips.
14. Rotate the brake caliper downwards.
^ Tighten the bolt to 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.).
15. CAUTION: Make sure the retaining clip is correctly installed to the brake shoe.
CAUTION: Make sure the brake shoe spring is not over stretched.
Install the secondary brake shoe.
^ Connect the parking brake cable.
^ Connect the parking brake cable retaining spring to the brake shoe lever, making sure the spring is not twisted.
^ Install the hold-down spring and retaining pin.
16. Using a suitable tie strap, tie back the spreader plate spring.
17. CAUTION: Make sure the retaining clip is correctly installed to the brake shoe.
CAUTION: Make sure the brake shoe spring is not over stretched.
Install the primary brake shoe.
^ Install the spreader plate and the spring.
^ Install the return spring.
^ Install the hold-down spring and retaining pin.
18. CAUTION: Make sure the brake shoe spring is not over stretched.
Install the brake shoe adjuster.
19. Remove and discard the spreader plate spring tie strap.
20. Install the RH rear brake disc.
21. Install the wheels and tires.
^ Tighten the wheel nuts to 140 Nm (103 ft. lbs.).
22. Adjust the parking brake shoes.
