Introduction

Some 2001 model year LS430 owners may experience a flutter sound from the center A/C vents. To correct this concern, a new heater case sub-assembly has been made available for dealer installation.

This repair is covered under the Lexus Comprehensive Warranty. This warranty is in effect for 48 months or 50,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle's in-service date.

* Warranty application is limited to correction of a problem based upon a customer's specific complaint.

Repair Procedure





Replacement of Heater Case Sub-Assembly





1. Remove Instrument Safety Pad Remove the instrument safety pad as explained on page from BO-128 to BO-134 of the 2002 L8430 Repair Manual Volume 2 (Pub. No. RM874U2).





2. Remove Air Duct Sub-Assembly

A. Remove the 5 Philips Head screws.





B. Using a flat tip screwdriver, release the 2 retaining tabs at the top of the air duct.

NOTE:
Be careful not to break the retaining tabs, as this part will be reused.





C. Remove the air duct sub-assembly.

HINT:
After removing the retaining screws, pull outward on the top of the duct.





NOTE:

^ Be careful not to touch or move the pulley and wire of the heater unit sub-assembly.

^ If these parts get separated or moved, the reinstallation may be impossible and the HVAC unit assembly replacement will be necessary.





3. Remove Bracket

A. Remove the 3 screws holding the heater case and bracket.

B. Remove the bolt and grommet by the side of the body and bracket.

NOTE:

^ Be careful not to apply pressure to the step motor of the heater unit sub-assembly during removal.

^ Do not remove the step motor at this time.

4. Remove Heater Case Sub-Assembly

A. Using a flat tip screwdriver, release the retaining tabs from both sides on the heater case.





NOTE:
Be careful not to damage the retaining tabs on the side of the heater unit sub-assembly as shown in illustration.





B. Remove the 5 screws.

C. Remove the heater case sub-assembly.





NOTE:

^ Be careful not to touch or move the pulley and cable of the heater unit sub-assembly.

^ If these parts get separated or moved, the reinstallation may be impossible and HVAC unit assembly replacement will be necessary.





5. Install New Heater Case Sub-Assembly

NOTE:
Do not touch the sliding surface of the film door and heater case sub-assembly.





NOTE
Be careful not to transfer any oil or dust to the sliding surface of the film door or heater case sub-assembly.





A. Install the new heater case sub-assembly, then confirm that the heater case sub-assembly is correctly placed to the heater unit at the 2 retaining tabs.

B. Fasten the heater case sub-assembly to the heater unit with the 5 screws





6. Install Bracket

A Install the bracket to the heater case with the 3 screws.

B. Install the bolt and grommet.

NOTE:
Be careful not to apply pressure to the step motor of the heater unit sub-assembly.





7. Install Air Duct Sub-Assembly

A. Confirm that the 2 retaining tabs are firmly installed.

B. Install the air duct sub-assembly to the heater unit with 5 screws.

8. Install Instrument Safety Pad

Install the instrument safety pad as explained on page BO-128 to BO-134 of the 2002 LS430 Repair Manual Volume 2 (Pub. No. RM874U2).
