Water Pump: Service and Repair

WATER PUMP

Components:

REMOVAL
1. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL

CAUTION: Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from negative (-) battery terminal to prevent airbag and seat belt pretensioner activation.

2. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER
3. REMOVE V-BANK COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Remove the 2 bolts and cover.

4. REMOVE COOL AIR INTAKE DUCT SEAL
5. REMOVE ENGINE ROOM SIDE COVER RH
6. REMOVE ENGINE ROOM SIDE COVER LH
7. REMOVE NO.1 AIR CLEANER INLET
a. Remove the bolt and inlet.

8. REMOVE INTAKE AIR CONNECTOR PIPE
9. REMOVE AIR CLEANER ASSEMBLY
10. DISCONNECT RADIATOR HOSE INLET
11. DISCONNECT RADIATOR HOSE OUTLET
12. DISCONNECT NO.1 OIL COOLER INLET TUBE
13. DISCONNECT NO.1 OIL COOLER OUTLET TUBE
14. REMOVE FRONT BUMPER COVER
15. REMOVE RADIATOR SUPPORT OPENING COVER
16. REMOVE HOOD LOCK CONTROL CABLE COVER
17. REMOVE HOOD LOCK ASSEMBLY
18. REMOVE UPPER RADIATOR SUPPORT SUBASSEMBLY
19. REMOVE RADIATOR ASSEMBLY
20. REMOVE FAN AND GENERATOR V BELT
21. REMOVE GENERATOR ASSEMBLY
22. REMOVE COMPRESSOR WITH PULLEY ASSEMBLY
23. REMOVE V-RIBBED BELT TENSIONER ASSEMBLY
24. REMOVE NO.2 IDLER PULLEY SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Remove the bolt, cover plate and pulley.

25. REMOVE CRANKSHAFT DAMPER SUB-ASSEMBLY
26. REMOVE NO.3 TIMING BELT COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY LH
27. REMOVE NO.3 TIMING BELT COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY RH
28. REMOVE NO.2 TIMING BELT COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY
29. REMOVE IDLER PULLEY ASSEMBLY
30. REMOVE NO.1 TIMING BELT COVER
31. REMOVE TIMING GEAR COVER SPACER
a. Remove the cover spacer and gasket.

32. REMOVE NO.1 CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR
33. REMOVE NO.1 CHAIN TENSIONER ASSEMBLY
a. Remove the 2 bolts and tensioner.

34. REMOVE NO.1 CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR PLATE
a. Remove the plate.

35. REMOVE TIMING BELT

36. REMOVE WATER INLET HOUSING
a. Remove the 2 bolts and water inlet housing.
b. Remove the O-ring from the inlet housing.

37. REMOVE NO.2 TIMING BELT IDLER SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Remove the bolt, cover plate and pulley.

38. REMOVE WATER PUMP ASSEMBLY
a. Remove the 5 bolts, 2 stud bolts and nut.

b. Using a screwdriver, remove the water pump and gasket.
c. Remove the O-ring.

INSTALLATION
1. CLEAN WATER PUMP ASSEMBLY

2. INSTALL WATER PUMP ASSEMBLY
a. Install a new O-ring to the water by-pass hose.

b. Install a new gasket and the water pump with the 5 bolts, 2 stud bolts and nut.
Torque: 21 Nm (214 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.) for bolts 18 Nm (194 kgf-cm, 24 ft. lbs.) for nuts and stud bolts

3. INSTALL NO.2 TIMING BELT IDLER SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Install the pulley with the bolt.
Torque: 34.5 Nm (352 kgf-cm, 25 ft. lbs.)

4. INSTALL WATER INLET HOUSING
a. Install a new O-ring.
b. Apply soapy water to the O-ring.
c. Apply seal packing to the groove of the water inlet housing as shown in the illustration.
Seal packing: Part No.08826-00100 or equivalent

NOTICE:
^ After applying seal packing, install the part within 5 minutes.
^ Be sure to keep the O-ring away from engine oil. The O-ring must be replaced if it contacts engine oil.

d. Install the water inlet housing with the 2 bolts. Then connect the water hose.

Bolt Length:

Torque: 18 Nm (194 kgf-cm, 24 ft. lbs.)

5. INSTALL TIMING BELT
6. INSTALL NO.1 CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR PLATE
7. INSTALL TIMING GEAR COVER SPACER
a. Install anew gasket and cover spacer.

8. INSTALL NO.1 TIMING BELT COVER
9. INSTALL NO.2 TIMING BELT COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY
10. INSTALL IDLER PULLEY ASSEMBLY
11. INSTALL NO.3 TIMING BELT COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY RH
12. INSTALL NO.3 TIMING BELT COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY LH
13. INSTALL CRANKSHAFT DAMPER SUB-ASSEMBLY
14. INSTALL NO.2 IDLER PULLEY SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Install the pulley with the bolt.
Torque: 39 Nm (398 kgf-cm, 29 ft. lbs.)

15. INSTALL V-RIBBED BELT TENSIONER ASSEMBLY
16. INSTALL COMPRESSOR WITH PULLEY ASSEMBLY
17. INSTALL GENERATOR ASSEMBLY
18. INSTALL FAN AND GENERATOR V BELT
19. INSTALL RADIATOR ASSEMBLY
20. INSTALL UPPER RADIATOR SUPPORT SUB-ASSEMBLY
21. INSTALL HOOD LOCK ASSEMBLY
22. INSTALL HOOD LOCK CONTROL CABLE COVER
23. INSTALL RADIATOR SUPPORT OPENING COVER
24. INSTALL FRONT BUMPER COVER
25. DISCONNECT NO.1 OIL COOLER OUTLET TUBE
26. DISCONNECT NO.1 OIL COOLER INLET TUBE
27. CONNECT RADIATOR HOSE OUTLET
28. CONNECT RADIATOR HOSE INLET
29. ADD ENGINE COOLANT
30. CHECK FOR ENGINE COOLANT LEAKS
a. Check for engine coolant leaks.

31. INSTALL AIR CLEANER ASSEMBLY
32. INSTALL NO.1 AIR CLEANER INLET
a. Install the inlet with the bolt.
Torque: 5.0 Nm (51 kgf-cm, 44 inch lbs.)

33. INSTALL ENGINE ROOM SIDE COVER LH
34. INSTALL ENGINE ROOM SIDE COVER RH
35. INSTALL COOL AIR INTAKE DUCT SEAL
36. INSTALL V-BANK COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Install the cover with the 2 nuts.
Torque: 5.0 Nm (51 kgf-cm, 44 inch lbs.)

37. INSTALL ENGINE UNDER COVER
38. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
39. PERFORM INITIALIZATION
a. Perform initialization.

NOTICE: Certain systems need to be initialized after disconnecting and reconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal.
