REMOVAL
CAUTION: Some of these service operations affect the SRS airbag system. Refer to Restraint Systems Service Precautions.
1. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
2. REMOVE FRONT WHEELS
3. REMOVE COWL TOP VENTILATOR LOUVER RH
4. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
(a) Disable the AUTO TILT AWAY function by changing the customize parameter.
NOTICE: Record the current customize parameter setting (whether the AUTO TILT AWAY function is enabled or disabled) in order to restore the current setting after finishing the operation.
HINT: Performing the above operation causes the AUTO TILT AWAY function to be disabled when the engine switch is turned off.
(b) Turn the engine switch on (IG). Operate the tilt and telescopic switch to fully extend and lower the steering column assembly.
(c) Turn the engine switch off and disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal.
CAUTION: Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to prevent airbag and seat belt pretensioner activation.
NOTICE: After the engine switch is turned off, the HDD navigation system requires approximately 6 minutes to record various types of memory and settings. As a result, after turning the engine switch off, wait 6 minutes or more before disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.
5. REMOVE SWITCH AND VOLUME CASE
6. REMOVE NO. 2 STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER
7. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL PAD
8. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY
(a) Remove the steering wheel set nut.
(b) Put matchmarks on the steering wheel and main shaft.
(c) Using SST, remove the steering wheel assembly.
SST 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05011)
9. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER
(a) Remove the 3 screws.
(b) Detach the 2 claws to remove the steering column cover lower.
NOTICE: Do not damage the tilt and telescopic switch.
(c) Detach the 4 clips.
(d) Detach the claw to remove the steering column cover upper.
10. REMOVE TILT AND TELESCOPIC SWITCH
(a) Detach the switch connector.
(b) Using a screwdriver, detach the claw and pull out the switch.
NOTICE: Pushing on the claw too hard will break the claw.
HINT: Tape the screwdriver tip before use.
11. REMOVE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY WITH SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY
(a) Disconnect the connectors from the turn signal switch with spiral cable.
(b) Using pliers, grip the claws of the clamp and remove the turn signal switch with spiral cable from the steering column.
12. REMOVE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FINISH PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY
13. REMOVE INSTRUMENT SIDE PANEL LH
14. REMOVE NO. 1 INSTRUMENT CLUSTER MOULDING
15. REMOVE NO. 1 INSTRUMENT PANEL UNDER COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY
16. REMOVE DRIVER SIDE KNEE AIRBAG ASSEMBLY
17. REMOVE NO. 1 INSTRUMENT PANEL SAFETY PAD SUB-ASSEMBLY
18. REMOVE NO. 1 AIR DUCT SUB-ASSEMBLY
(a) Detach the 2 claws and remove the wiring harness protector.
(b) Detach the 2 claws, and remove the bolt and air duct.
19. REMOVE STEERING SLIDING YOKE WITH SHAFT SUB-ASSEMBLY
(a) Loosen bolt (A) and remove bolt (B), then slide the steering sliding yoke with shaft.
NOTICE:
^ Do not remove bolt (A).
^ Do not separate the steering sliding yoke from the power steering gear.
(b) Put matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke, No. 2 steering intermediate shaft and steering link.
(c) Remove the bolt and the steering sliding yoke from the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft.
HINT: Insert a screwdriver or equivalent into the yoke's hole. Hold down the intermediate shaft's claw and remove the intermediate shaft. If the claw is damaged, remove the claw. The intermediate shaft does not have to be replaced.
(d) Separate the steering sliding yoke shaft from the steering link.
20. REMOVE NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY
(a) Put matchmarks on the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft and the steering column.
(b) Remove the bolt.
(c) Remove the clamp and No. 2 steering intermediate shaft.
21. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY
(a) Disconnect the connectors and wire harness clamps from the steering column.
(b) Remove the 4 nuts and steering column.
DISASSEMBLY
1. REMOVE STEERING LOCK ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY
(a) Using a center punch, mark the center of the 2 tapered-head bolts.
(b) Using a 3 to 4 mm (0.12 to 0.16 in.) drill, drill a hole in the 2 bolts.
(c) Using a screw extractor, remove the 2 bolts and the steering lock actuator assembly from the steering column assembly.
2. REMOVE MULTIPLEX TILT AND TELESCOPIC ECU
INSPECTION
1. INSPECT TILT MOTOR
(a) Disconnect connector J28 from the multiplex tilt and telescopic ECU.
(b) Inspect the tilt motor.
(1) Connect the positive (+) battery terminal to terminal 1(TIM+) and the negative battery terminal to terminal 2(TIM-) of the tilt motor connector. Then confirm that the steering wheel tilts up.
OK: Steering wheel tilts up.
(2) Connect the negative (+) battery terminal to terminal 1(TIM+) and the positive battery terminal to terminal 2(TIM-) of the tilt motor connector. Then confirm that the steering wheel tilts down.
OK: Steering wheel tilts down.
2. INSPECT TELESCOPIC MOTOR
(a) Disconnect connector A from the multiplex tilt and telescopic ECU.
(b) Inspect the telescopic motor.
(1) Connect the positive (+) battery terminal to terminal (TEM+) and the negative (-) battery terminal to terminal (TEM-) of the telescopic motor connector. Then confirm that the steering column contracts.
OK: Steering column contracts.
(2) Connect the negative (-) battery terminal to terminal (TEM+) and the positive (+) battery terminal to terminal (TEM-) of the telescopic motor connector. Then confirm that the steering column extends.
OK: Steering column extends.
REASSEMBLY
1. INSTALL MULTIPLEX TILT AND TELESCOPIC ECU
2. INSTALL STEERING LOCK ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY
(a) Temporarily install the steering lock actuator assembly with 2 new tapered-head bolts.
(b) Tighten the 2 tapered-head bolts until the bolt heads break off.
INSTALLATION
1. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY
(a) Install the steering column assembly with the 4 nuts.
Torque: 26 N*m (260 kgf*cm, 19 ft.*lbf)
(b) Connect the connectors and wire harness clamps to the steering column assembly.
2. INSTALL NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY
(a) Install the clamp to the steering column hole shield.
(b) Align the matchmarks on the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly and the steering column.
(c) Install the bolt.
Torque: 35 N*m (360 kgf*cm, 26 ft.*lbf)
3. INSTALL STEERING SLIDING YOKE WITH SHAFT SUB-ASSEMBLY
(a) Align the matchmarks on the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly and steering sliding yoke sub-assembly.
(b) Align the matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly and steering link.
(c) Temporarily install bolt (B).
NOTICE: Do not tighten the bolt.
(d) Install bolt (A) and tighten bolt (B).
Torque: 35 N*m (360 kgf*cm, 26 ft.*lbf)
4. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
5. INSTALL NO. 1 AIR DUCT SUB-ASSEMBLY
(a) Attach the 2 claws to install the air duct.
(b) Install the bolt.
Torque: 9.8 N*m (100 kgf*cm, 87 in.*lbf)
(c) Attach the 2 claws and install the wiring harness protector.
6. INSTALL NO. 1 INSTRUMENT PANEL SAFETY PAD SUB-ASSEMBLY
7. INSTALL DRIVER SIDE KNEE AIRBAG ASSEMBLY
8. INSTALL NO. 1 INSTRUMENT PANEL UNDER COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY
9. INSTALL NO. 1 INSTRUMENT CLUSTER MOULDING
10. INSTALL INSTRUMENT SIDE PANEL LH
11. INSTALL INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FINISH PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY
12. INSTALL TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY WITH SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY
(a) Install the turn signal switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly to the steering column assembly with the clamp.
(b) Connect the connectors to the turn signal switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly.
13. INSTALL TILT AND TELESCOPIC SWITCH
(a) Attach the claw to install the switch.
(b) Connect the switch connector.
14. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN COVER
(a) Attach the claw to install the steering column cover upper.
(b) Attach the 4 clips to install the steering column cover upper onto the instrument panel cluster finish panel.
(c) Attach the 2 claws to install the steering column cover lower.
NOTICE: Do not damage the tilt and telescopic switch.
(d) Install the 3 screws.
Torque: 2.0 N*m (20 kgf*cm, 18 in.*lbf)
15. INSPECT SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY
16. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY
(a) Align the matchmarks on the steering wheel assembly and steering main shaft assembly.
(b) Install the steering wheel assembly set nut.
Torque: 50 N*m (510 kgf*cm, 37 ft.*lbf)
17. INSPECT STEERING WHEEL CENTER POINT
18. INSPECT STEERING PAD
(a) Inspect steering pad.
19. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL PAD
20. INSTALL NO. 2 STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER
21. INSTALL SWITCH AND VOLUME CASE
22. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
NOTICE: Reset the AUTO TILT AWAY function setting to the previous condition by changing the customize parameter.
23. INSTALL COWL TOP VENTILATOR LOUVER RH
24. INSPECT SRS WARNING LIGHT
(a) Inspect the SRS warning light.
25. PERFORM INITIALIZATION
(a) Perform initialization.
NOTICE: Certain systems need to be initialized after disconnecting and reconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.
