Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then place gear shift lever in Neutral position.
2. Remove gearshift lever boot, then the gearshift retainer cover and gasket.
3. Pull gearshift lever, wave washer, shim and bushing straight up and away from gearshift lever retainer.
4. Raise and support vehicle, then drain transmission fluid.
5. Remove driveshaft, then the exhaust pipe hanger to clutch housing attaching bolt.
6. Remove clutch release cylinder and place to one side.
7. Disconnect all electrical connectors from transmission, then remove starter.
8. Remove speedometer cable from extension housing.
9. Position suitable jack under rear of engine, protecting oil pan with wooden block.
10. Remove transmission to rear end of cylinder block attaching bolts, then support transmission using suitable jack.
11. Remove transmission support, then the crossmember attaching bolts and crossmember.
12. Separate clutch housing from locating dowels, then slide transmission rearward until main drive shaft spline clears clutch disc.
13. Lower transmission from vehicle.
14. Reverse procedure to install.
